  • Waterfront wild campsite overlooking Cobscook Bay in Maine
  • Five minutes’ drive to Cobscook Bay State Park and Timberdoodle Trail
  • Naturist friendly; access to swimming, boating, fishing and hiking
With a handful of wild pitches overlooking the ocean or set deep within stands of pine trees, Elmer’s Cove sits right next to Cobscook Bay State Park in coastal Maine. Each camping pitch has a picnic table and firepit, with firewood included in the deal, but otherwise facilities are few: drinking water and a rudimentary outhouse doubling as a toilet, and no electric hook-ups. Here’s your chance to kick back in peaceful countryside. There are plenty of quiet spots for naturists to forest-bathe among the trees, and around the campsite you have stunning views over Cobscook Bay – especially pretty at sunrise and sunset. And don’t forget to try star-gazing on clear nights, when you can retreat to your pitch and watch the skies glisten amid near-total silence. With 450 feet of cove frontage less than a minutes’ walk from the tree-sheltered pitches, activities available include boating and kayaking from the paved boat launch, as well as fishing and wild swimming. A whole range of scenic forest and beach hiking trails can also be accessed directly from the pitches.

Local attractions

It’s all about the nature in this untamed coastal corner of Maine. As well as all its walking and cycling trails, Cobscook Bay State Park is a haven for birds and animals who come to take advantage of the abundant fish life. You may be lucky enough to see eagles and ospreys, seals and otters – or perhaps the occasional bear. Other easily accessed hiking routes include the Timberdoodle Trail (both five minutes’ drive) through birch, spruce and cedar, and the Whiting Bay Beach Trail (20 minutes), a looped walk with views to Bar Island and the Birch Beach Spur. Go fishing for tunny and bluefish in sweeping Dennys Bay (five minutes), or have an amble around the marshes and lakes of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge (20 minutes) – all the while keeping an eye out for the 225 species of birds and endangered species in the preserve. And when you feel like a day at the beach, pack a picnic and spend the day at Mowry Beach Preserve (25 minutes), an expanse of sand with views of Lubec Channel and Campobello Island.
