  • Within 20 minutes’ drive of three Black Hills lakes
  • Five minutes’ drive from restaurants and shops in Custer town
If your idea of a stunning time in South Dakota could easily include canoeing on pristine lakes and dining on burgers after a day on the trails, get settled in at Bearded Buffalo Resort. Just five minutes’ drive away from the tourist town of Custer and a couple of miles outside of Custer State Park, this is just the spot for an outdoorsy break with plenty of modern conveniences to look forward to at the end of the day. Custer State Park’s granite peaks and mountain lakes are excellent for activities like hiking, biking, swimming and fishing, and conveniently, there are also three Black Hills lakes within 20 minutes’ drive of Bearded Buffalo Resort. There is plenty of wildlife to spy on in the state park, from a large bison herd to antelope and bighorn sheep. In Custer, descend upon burger joints, gastro pubs and bars on the main street to refuel after a day in the outdoors. If you fancy some snacks by the fire, stop by a shop before heading back to base; firepits are permitted on site. In summer, there are performances at the Black Hills Playhouse, a historic stock theatre 20 minutes’ drive away from the site.

Local attractions

Want to spot some wildlife without putting too much strain on the joints? The 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road (25 minutes’ drive) is your best friend. Driving this route gives you the chance to see antelope, buffalo and elk; at dusk and dawn, animals should be particularly active. Gorgeous Wind Cave National Park (20 minutes) is another great place for outdoorsy days out. Look out for bison and elk on trails such as the Rankin Ridge or take a guided tour with a park ranger into the Wind Cave chambers. With forests and grasslands, the landscapes are simply spectacular. A few more things to tick off your bucket list are the Crazy Horse Memorial (10 minutes), a new monument which shows a war leader Crazy Horse pointing towards his tribal lands, and the Mount Rushmore National Memorial (35 minutes), an older mountain sculpture (of former presidents) finished in 1941. The Needles Highway (under half an hour’s drive), well known for its spectacular pine and spruce forests and views of granite mountains, crosses through the Custer State Park too.
