  • Peaceful park on the Upper Peoria Lake, 15 minutes' drive from Peoria
  • Adjacent to the Bluff Spring Fen nature preserve
  • Five minutes' walk from the river and beach of Funks Run
Boating, perhaps? Or how about a beach day? Or fishing, hiking – and discounted pizza? Guests have happy access to all the above at MillPoint RV Park in Illinois: it's right on scenic Upper Peoria Lake on the Illinois River, with access to the river and beach at Funks Run five minutes' walk away. MillPoint is 15 minutes' drive from Peoria, the biggest city on the Illinois River and home to shops, restaurants, museums and parks. This is also your coveted pizza place, as all MillPoint guests get 20% discount at the Peoria Pizza Works, a pub-like place with open mic nights, cocktails, and breakfast and lunch opening alongside its extensive pizza, hot food and salad menu. (Firepits and picnic tables are plentiful around the park for evenings when you're doing the catering yourself.) Nature spotters are also well sorted here, as MillPoint is adjacent to the the Bluff Spring Fen nature preserve, 100 handsome wetland acres home to wildflowers and waist-high grass as well as eight species of orchids and dozens of species of butterfly. Nature trails around the fens run directly from the park; there's also a walking trail from MillPoint to the river and beach. Amenities at this peaceful place include toilets and showers with disabled facilities; a launderette and free wifi. Firewood and local produce are available to buy.

Local attractions

There's plenty to do in Peoria alongside the pizza and beer, including the Peoria Riverfront Museum with its galleries, temporary exhibitions, permanent collections, theatre and planetarium, and the Peoria Zoo and its Africa area with lions, rhinos, giraffes, monkeys and zebras. Just outside town, about 30 minutes' drive from MillPoint, the Wildlife Prairie Park has animals of all sizes, fishing, mountain bike and hiking, disc golf, animal trails, an adventure zone, a sledding hill and regular family events. A must is a cruise on the Spirit of Peoria river boat, a paddleboat doing 90-minute tours along the Illinois River from and back to the riverfront dock. After that, there's the WeaverRidge Golf Club or Par-A-Dice casino to try your luck at; then, if you're not spending the full evening in Peoria pubs or pizza places, trot along to the Corn Stock Theatre, a community and outdoor theatre with performances in a circus tent.
