Excellent Årjäng stuff… Ekeby Camping in the Värmland County is a seriously peaceful place on the shores of Västra Silen lake, a seriously scenic Swedish place to be for those into outdoor sports and activities like fishing, boating, swimming and canoeing. And sunbathing: the site has direct access to a family-friendly sandy beach. Wildlife wanders are popular pastimes in this region too, along with gentle cycle rides, day trips across the border to Norway 15 minutes from Årjäng, and peaceful potters around the forest near Ekeby to forage for berries and mushrooms. The stone statue of Borgåsgubben is 15 minutes away. Ekeby has an on-site café for coffee, cake and spectacular lake views; a playground and a volleyball court; free wifi; a toilet and shower block and a laundry room. Pets are welcome.

Dips in the lake, basks on the beach and peaceful days kayaking on Västra Silen lake are top picks from Ekeby Camping if you don't want to travel too far; avid anglers will be made up too with the fishy picks from the lake, where salmon of up to 12kg have been landed. For snapshotting opps, tip your camera towards the man of Borgåsgubben, the stone statue built around the sixteenth or seventeenth century as some sort of rocky Swedish scarecrow, and the designated viewpoint over the lake and surrounding forest within about 15 minutes' drive. Also nearby are horse riding excursions and riding lessons at the small and private farm of Mosseruds Gård, and canoeing at the Nordmarkens Canoe Center 23 kilometres away. If, however, you're a fortunate enough sort to have your own kayak or canoe? Launch it straight from the campsite for a paddle on the lake.
