  • Family glampsite 20 minutes’ walk from the beach on the Asturias coast
  • Castro de Cabo Blanco cliffs five minutes’ drive; Taramundi 45 minutes
  • Spacious pre-erected tents; bar, coffee shop and barbecues on site
No need to mess around with tent poles when you arrive at peaceful, relaxed Kampaoh Cabo Blanco, as all the hard work is done for you. Arrive on site, head for your pre-erected tent – with plenty of space and lots of useful extras like storage and lighting – and let your holiday begin. The site is set among trees on the outskirts of Valdepares, a pretty seaside town on the dramatic Asturias coastline, which is renowned for its greenery, towering cliffs and spectacular beaches. It’s a handy base for family breaks under canvas; you can keep the kids happy at the on-site playground, and head off teenage moans with trips to a choice of sandy beaches including Playa de Porcía, Monellos and Torbas (all around 20 minutes’ walk), while hikers and cyclists looking to get back to nature are in pole position for clifftop walks and bike rides. Gourmets can sample Asturian specialities including blue-veined Cabrales cheese, ‘cachopo’ veal fillets and regional ciders at restaurants in Valdepares (15 minutes’ walk) and La Caridad (five minutes’ drive). Refreshment-wise back on site, stock up on wine, snacks and caffeine from the bar and coffee shop, then flame up the barbecue and eat ‘en famille’ at picnic tables shaded by trees.

Local attractions

When it’s time to hit the seaside, try Playa de Porcía (20 minutes’ walk) for rock pooling with the kids and a renowned beach bar serving up plates of paella and seafood. Playa de las Catedrales (20 minutes’ drive) gets its name from the bizarre rock formations on the sand, while Monellos and Torbas beaches (both 20 minutes’ walk) are nigh-deserted pebble strips backed by steep cliffs. Head for Castro de Cabo Blanco cliffs (five minutes’ drive) for wind-blown strolls and spectacular views over the Cantabrian Sea, with rocky headlands stretching into the distance. For more hiking and cycling trails, head inland to the Río Eo, Oscos y Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve (40 minutes), sitting between Galicia and Asturias and an area of protected foothills, valleys and woodland. There are riverside strolls to be enjoyed in ancient Taramundi (45 minutes), an Asturian hill village with photogenic traditional stone cottages and barns, or step back in time to visit the relics of an Iron Age village at Castro de Coaña (15 minutes). Back down on the coast, there are scenic seafront walks, gleaming white-washed houses and busy fishing harbours to discover at Puerto de Vega and Luarca (both 20 minutes).
