  • Camping pods by La Tejita beach with views of Montaña Roja
  • A five-minute drive from surf shops and dive centre at El Médano
  • Restaurant, bar, shop and swimming pool on site
What a tiptop Tenerife location – Camping Montaña Roja takes its name from the mountain (a red one, indeed) that provides the scenic backdrop for this south coast site. A scramble up to the top and back should take around an hour or so and can be rewarded with a dip in the sea at La Tejita beach (also handily next to the site) to cool off. If it’s not sea-plunging weather, scoot back to site for a quick shower to hose off any remnants of red dust before a swim in the outdoor pool. The mountain’s quite a gorgeous sight from afar too, so if you don’t fancy the hike you can easily justify heading down to the beach for a picnic and pic-snapping. And once you’ve viewed the mountain and the beach? Perhaps it’s time for a bit more activity. Keep it coastal by heading to El Médano (five minutes’ drive) for instruction in the art of surfing, kite-surfing and scuba diving, or head to the island’s interior for hikes among the volcanic vistas of the Teide National Park. You’ll need plenty of eats to keep you going through all this, of course. A beachside barbecue is a fine option (pick up the necessaries at the site shop or in El Médano), as is a meal or takeaway at the site restaurant. There’s a launderette on site to sort you out if you’ve got a bit grubby on your travels, and a wifi connection to help you post pics of your pleasing views.

Local attractions

You’ll want to start with a meander up the mountain, of course – there are several paths to pick from, so most folk should be able to find a way up to the 171-metre pinnacle without too much of a struggle. Next stop after that may well be Mount Teide, the island’s central volcanic peak and Spain’s highest point at a heady 3,718 metres. Getting to the top doesn’t involve any extensive clambering, for you can ride up gracefully in a cable car from the base station an hour’s drive away. The scenery around here is simply stunning, so it’s worth planning a hike around the rivers of petrified lava and unlikely rock formations. Back down at sea level, there are many places around the island for a seafront stroll – the black sands of Los Gigantes beach (45 minutes) are worth a trip, as is El Bollullo (an hour), best reached by hiking through banana plantations. Closer to home, naturists can strip off for a dip in a little cove at the end of La Tejita beach, and active sorts can get their kicks kitesurfing, surfing and scuba diving from El Médano (five minutes’ drive).
