  • Direct access to the beach a few steps away
  • On the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route
  • Pool, waterslides and café bar with terrace
Just a few seconds… that's all it takes to stroll to the sands from Camping El Terrón, in the centre of the Ria de Arosa in Rias Baixas. And it's a right proper place for promenaders too, as it's bang on the famed pilgrimage route the Camino de Santiago/St James's Way, the World Heritage Site walking trail taken by holy ones in northwestern Spain in days of yore. As you might figure from a site right next to the beach, sea views are set all around too: head to the café bar to see the waves and laze around on the terrace for a bit to soak them up rightly (happily, the kids can be kept busy while you're doing this, as the pool and its waterslides are within eyeing distance). Activities are around too: more watery hours can be had at the El Terrón zorbing sessions; while on land and of an evening, you can mortify your kids by belting out a few classics at karaoke. For amenities, El Terrón has a washing-up area and modern amenities blocks with toilet cubicles and free hot showers.

Local attractions

As well as basking on the beach under the Spanish sun (that'll take care of the first week), a right range of activities are around in the area, including kitesurfing, diving, horse riding and hiking. Some smashing snorkelling can be had too: we heartily recommend the Cíes Islands for samples. Within about 65 kilometres for day trips is Santiago de Compostela, the town where the Camino de Santiago pilgrims' route winds up (it's thought to be the burial place of St James). The cathedral built to honour James is the city's main sight, but take time too to wander around the Old Town or to have an evening in one of the many pubs and nightclubs as the sun goes down. Also 65km away is Pontevedra, capital of the comarca and province of Pontevedra as well as of the Rias Baixas. It's another Galician city with a splendid Old Town to potter around, along with a famed market, public square and acres' worth of parks and gardens. Vigo and the Castro fortress is the same distance away. If you'd rather get out and about into nature, take the camera to the rock formations of As Catedrais/Beach of the Cathedrals, to see its arches and caves at low tide.
