  • Eco-friendly site on an island in the Islas Atlánticas National Park
  • Central location for easy access to the island's four hiking trails
  • Cafeteria, playground, shop and accessible amenities
Oh, Isla de Ons is a truly gorgeous place – all craggy cliffs, quiet hiking trails and the kind of beaches that’ll provide fodder for your wistful daydreams for many a winter’s day to come. Just over five kilometres in length, it’s the largest of the islands in the Islas Atlánticas National Park, and a properly peaceful place to spend your days. Board a boat in Bueu and make your way up to Camping Isla de Ons, one of just a handful of places where you can spend the night on this rocky outcrop. Being a protected area, everything here has been set up to be eco-friendly as poss, with solar panels providing the power and pitches placed in such a way as to minimise the impact on the native trees. It’s a safe bet to assume you’ve come here to surround yourself with the glories of nature, so you’ll understand the need to keep facilities to a minimum. The site certainly doesn’t want for creature comforts though – there’s a little playground to keep the cubs happy, and a mini market and cafeteria to provide grub for family feeding time. A launderette, washing-up area and accessible bathrooms have been provided, with hot and cold water available (sensible water usage only please, peeps, to keep Mother Nature smiling). And you can spread the word about your eco retreat to the outside world using the free wifi service. Fancy a seafood feast? The island is famed for its octopus dishes, and you can try them out for yourself at a couple of restaurants around a 15-minute walk away. A couple of bars down by the harbour can furnish you with your after-dinner drinks, too (don’t forget your torch though – it could be a dark old stumble back otherwise).

Local attractions

Whatever your packing style, two vital things that must get into your luggage are your walking shoes and your swimming cozzie. The former are so that you can take to the island’s trails – there are four main tracks, ranging from the 45-minute castle trail through to the three-hour northern route, which passes various bird breeding sites and crosses the sand dunes. Highlights of the walks also include the lighthouse, a couple of ruined fortifications and the 12-metre-deep 'hellhole' with gulls nesting in its walls. All of the routes can be walked on your own, or on a free guided hike. And you’ll be needing your swimmers for the beaches that pepper the island’s east coast. They’re a gorgeous bunch, all soft white sands and shallow, clear waters that pretty much demand you spend a goodly chunk of time there. The largest is Praia de Melide, up at the top of the island – you can walk there in about 40 minutes or so. In summer there are extra activities laid on around the island – expert-led stargazing excursions, orienteering, snorkelling and kayaking to the national park’s other islands among them. Site staff or the local tourist office can keep you posted on what’s going on while you’re there.
