  • Just outside A Pobra del Trives, in the Ribeira Sacra nature area
  • On-site restaurant; 20 minutes' walk from town centre restaurants
  • Near several marked hiking trails and canoe trips on the Sil river
Hiking, biking, canoeing or skiing by day, then trotting back to base for evenings sipping local wines and gobbling Galician delights… if that sounds like the kind of schedule you could contemplate, make for Camping A Masía, just outside the town of A Pobra del Trives. A wise packing list for this place might include loading the car with bikes, skis and/or fishing kit – you’re in the rural surrounds of the Ribeira Sacra nature area, and outdoorsy antics are all around. There are heaps of hiking and cycle trails to make your way along, and the Miño and Sil rivers nearby for fishing and canoe or boat trips. Wander over in winter for snow days at the Cabeza de Manzaneda ski resort, 20 minutes away. Handily for those seeking to wind down after an active day, this area is also rather famed for its wines – having viewed the vineyards in action nearby you can sip the end products on site, accompanying a meal in the restaurant. DIY pickings and dinners out are a 20-minute trot away in the town centre, and you’re welcome to bring bits back for a barbecue. The site has free hot showers and toilets (also suitable for disabled guests), a launderette, a washing-up area and a playground to entertain los niños while you put your feet up (glass of wine not obligatory but recommended).

Local attractions

Boots on and ready to roam… there are several circular hiking routes you can follow from the town, taking in forests, Roman remains and natural rock formations as you go (and, if ancient lore is anything to go by, goblin hideaways among the trees). The local rivers are ripe for rambles too – the Route of the Monasteries follows the banks of the Sil river through to the Cañon del Sil (an hour’s drive), where the Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil gazes down into the deep canyon. Get a sense of scale on a boat trip through the canyon’s craggy cliffs while you’re there. Closer to home, a watersports centre five minutes’ drive away hires canoes and kayaks for river paddles, and can organised guided tours for those who need a little specialist help on the navigation and technique front. You’ll see vineyards all over when you roam around here, and there are several wineries and bodegas to drop in on within a half-hour drive – sip gently if you’re driving or cycling, as they’re generally happy to sell you a few bottles to uncork for more extensive swigging later.
