General

  • Small riverside site five minutes' drive from Monterroso
  • Six kilometres from St James's Way long-distance hiking route
  • Outdoor 25-metre swimming pool and paddling pool

How do you like your swims while on your Spanish sojourn? Lengths of a proper 25-metre outdoor pool perhaps? Splashing around with the kids in a paddling pool? Or maybe a bit of river swimming (or pretending to swim while actually just cooling off under a waterfall)? During the summer months at Camping Monterroso you can sample the pleasures of all three, and all pretty much next door to each other (excellent news for the terminally indecisive).

In the woods on the banks of the Ulla river and five minutes’ drive from the small town of Monterroso, the pools here are of particular interest for walkers on St James’s Way looking for an overnight stop and somewhere to soothe weary feet while en route to Santiago de Compostela. The historic pilgrims’ route passes around six kilometres away; fairweather hikers who don’t fancy the whole 700 or so kilometres can get a taster by walking sections of it or choose one of the shorter local routes such as the riverside Pena de Corvo (a more foot-friendly five kilometres).

Walker or not, once you’ve cooled your heels in the pool, you can rev the energy levels back up with a game of tennis or retreat to the surrounding grassy sunbathing area for a rest in the sun or a shady spot while the kids scramble about at the playground. You’ll not have to trot too far for your refreshments here, either – there’s an ice cream van for sweet treats and the café-bar is open all days for drinks, snacks and gorgeous Galician grub (the owners’ top thumbs up go to fresh seafood and shellfish dishes washed down with a chilled glass or three of the local Albariño white wine – si, por favor).

If you’re more of a picnic person, there’s a huge outdoor eating area for you, too – plenty of sturdy stone tables to spread out whatever jamón, tortilla or other tasty titbits you’ve managed to forage on your travels. Wherever you dined, warm up your vocal cords for a bit of an after-dinner singsong up at the bar: the karaoke really gets going of an evening here, with more than 1000 English and Spanish songs on the list to select from (less-excellent news for the terminally indecisive).

From the manager...

Hello , we feel a lot you have not liked the location of the campsite, in that sense nothing we can do.
The campsite is located on the outskirts of the village and one of the most wonderful of all interior environments Galicia. We do not understand the negative recommendation to other users because it is a modest but very quiet campsite where our concern is always the customer friendly service . We think it is not the kind of environment you wanted.
Thank you so much , anyway , for your visit and we hope that with your advice and opion continue improving day by day.
Carmen Barros .

Local attractions

Hardened hikers and casual walkers will want to be packing their best boots around these parts, to set foot on some of the fab local trails. Start by heading out on the paths that flank the Ulla river from the site, or try the Pena de Corvo circular route through the woods and around the river (it officially starts in town but can be taken from the site instead). Walkers on St James’s Way and other visitors recommend the detour to Castro de Castromaior, a Celtic hill fort a couple of hours’ hike from the site.

A three-hour hike from the site (or a 20-minute drive if your legs aren’t up to it) is the Pambre Castle, where you can walk on the walls and inside the castle’s rooms. More wall-wandering awaits in Lugo, a 45-minute drive from the site – this time in the form of mighty well-preserved Roman ones that make a good half-hour orientation tour of the town. While you’re here, also seek out the provincial museum, the Roman bridge and the cathedral before cooling off in the pleasingly shaded Parque do Mino.

For those of you not walking there, it will take you just over an hour to get to Santiago de Compostela in the car to visit the Romanesque churches, meander around the medieval cathedral and generally poke about in the cool courtyards and arcades. Fuel your ramblings by nibbling tapas as you go, or stopping at a café for a coffee and a slice of tarta de Santiago, the city’s very own almond cake.
