- Small riverside site five minutes' drive from Monterroso
- Six kilometres from St James's Way
- Outdoor 25-metre swimming pool and paddling pool
How do you like your Spanish swims? Via lengths of a 25-metre outdoor pool, perhaps? By splashing around with the kids in a paddling pool… or maybe via a bit of river swimming? During the summer months at Camping Monterroso, in the woods on the banks of the Ulla river five minutes’ drive from Monterroso, you can sample the pleasures of all three, which should be excellent news for the terminally indecisive…
These watery options should be of particular interest for walkers on St James’s Way looking for a stop enroute to Santiago de Compostela: the pilgrims’ route passes six kilometres away. (Fairweather hikers who don’t fancy the whole 700 or so kilometres can walk sections of it or take one of the shorter local routes such as the riverside Pena de Corvo.)
Camping Monterroso has an ice cream van for essential fuelling up, and a café-bar serving drinks, snacks and Galician grub (the owners’ top picks are fresh seafood and shellfish dishes washed down with a glass or three of the local Albariño wine). A huge outdoor eating area is around if you'd prefer a picnic, with plenty of stone tables on which to spread out your haul of local fare.
Wherever you dine, warm up your vocal cords for a post-dinner singsong up at the bar: the karaoke really gets going of an evening here, with more than 1000 English and Spanish songs on the list to select from (less excellent news for the terminally indecisive…).

Local attractions
Hardened hikers and casual walkers will want to be packing their best boots around these parts, to set foot on some of the fab local trails. Start by heading out on the paths that flank the Ulla river from the site, or try the Pena de Corvo circular route through the woods and around the river (it officially starts in town but can be taken from the site instead).
A three-hour hike from the site (or a 20-minute drive if your legs aren’t up to it) is Pambre Castle, where you can walk on the walls before venturing inside the castle’s rooms. More wall wandering awaits in Lugo, a 45-minute drive from the site – this time in the form of mighty well-preserved Roman ones that make a good half-hour orientation tour of the town.
For those of you not walking there, it's just over an hour to Santiago de Compostela by car to visit the Romanesque churches, meander around the medieval cathedral and generally poke about in the cool courtyards and arcades. Fuel your ramblings by stopping at a café for a coffee and a slice of tarta de Santiago, the city’s famed almond cake.
