Set in the extensive, palm-tree-dotted landscaped gardens of a finca, the Makkan Club is a small complex with simple accommodation in light-filled wooden bungalows overlooking the swimming pool and sundeck. Ten minutes’ drive from Oleiros, this lively spot is also close to north-coast Atlantic beaches as well as the shops and seafood restaurants of A Coruña (20 minutes). Each unit has a double bedroom with a TV and storage for all your kit, plus an ensuite bathroom. Outside, you can laze on your mini-terrace and watch the kids at play in the swimming pool, and cool off with a couple of laps of your own. It’s a short stroll across the sun deck to the poolside bar, which serves a constant round of snacks and drinks throughout the day, from breakfast toasties to burgers. You can get together with new-found friends on the sun deck, enjoy a quiet drink with your other half or – should you feel inclined – join in the night-time entertainment on Tuesdays and Thursdays in high season. Anything else you need, just ask at reception, where staff can also advise on local sightseeing and recommend restaurants.

Local attractions

If you’re heading for the beach, there’s one for every mood. The sweeping bay at Praia de Porto Nabal (five minutes’ drive) has views across the Ría da Coruña estuary to A Coruña, while the remote, rock-strewn cove at Praia das Margaritas (also five minutes) is reached by pathway down a craggy cliff. Santa Cristina Beach (15 minutes) is a sandy peninsula backed by lots of seafood restaurants and terrace bars, and surf is generally up at Bastiagueiro beach (10 minutes), where you can hire gear if you’re keen to get out catching waves. Still down by the ocean, you can reach Castelo de Santa Cruz (20 minutes’ walk) by pedestrian walkway over the sea to its minuscule island, or head for the slender white tower of Faro de Mera lighthouse (an hour) for spectacular sunset views on cloudless evenings. From Mera beach, follow the seafront walk to Parque da Lagoa (10 minutes) to spot wading birds and swans among the reeds, or turn north and follow the hiking or cycling trails out to Costa de Dexo (25 minutes by bike) for more spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean.
