  • Family-friendly site in the walls of a medieval convent in Louro
  • 10 minutes' walk from a sheltered beach with lifeguards and play areas
  • Bar and restaurant on site, with open-air terrace
Beaches, watersports, woodland wanders, historic attractions – all are within walking distance of Camping San Francisco, making it a top pick for those whose party includes somewhat differing opinions of what constitutes a great day out. And it’s not just the tourist attractions that are easily accessed from here; you’ll also be but a mere few minutes’ amble from restaurants, a supermarket and a bakery for handy eats and drinks. But first, to the beach – a mighty fine sandy swathe stretching out for almost a kilometre, and a supremely tot-friendly spot with lifeguards, play areas and safe seawater splashing thanks to its sheltered location at the mouth of the Muros e Noia estuary. And all just a gentle 10-minute trot from your pitch (great news for those with little legs). It’s a fably family-friendly vibe on site, too, safely encased in the medieval walls of the town’s old convent and with loads of trees casting a cool shade over the pitches. A playground and sports area are on site for the tiddlers (and the not-such-tiddlers), and there’s a wifi connection for those who can’t stay away from their gadgetry. Handily for those lazy days there’s also a bar and restaurant with a lovely terrace looking out over the site’s gorgeous greenery. Meanwhile, DIY types can pick up ingredients from the mini market and head to the barbecue area to cook up their own Spanish supper.

Liked: Fue nuestra primera experiencia en parcela de camping (pusimos el coche y tienda de camping, aprovechando la electricidad). Una muy buena experiencia. Camping tranquilo, gente agradable, parcela de tamaño correcto, internet de velocidad decente, la tienda tenía más o menos lo que hacía falta, la comida del restaurante nos pareció muy rica, nos ofrecieron flexibilidad al elegir la parcela, baños limpios, duchas confirtables... Y la playa que hay cerca del camping es un paraíso.

Disliked: Muchas abejas y avispas, nos entraron avispas en la tienda más de una vez. Los precios de la tienda se me hacían un poco altos, pero soy novato en estos campings, y entiendo que quizás sea normal que sean más caros que un supermercado.

Local attractions

Beach buffs, behold – not one, not two, but three super stretches of sand are within easy reach here for your sunbathing, swimming and sandcastling pleasure. More active types should make tracks to Area Maior beach, 10 minutes’ drive away, for watersports including windsurfing, paddleboarding and kitesurfing. Or pop your comfy shoes on and head out for a coastal walk in the Monte e Lagoa de Louro, a rural open area just outside the resort – it’ll take you an hour or so to hike out to the lighthouse at the far end of the headland. Another lovely walk is up to the petroglyphs at Laxe das Rodas, half an hour away; for a further history fix, head over to Muros (an hour’s walk or 15-minute drive) to potter around among the narrow streets and visit the Sanctuary of Virgen del Camino.
