By the sea, by the mountains, and a few minutes' drive from both Benicàssim and another golden sandy Mediterranean beach… tick all boxes off your holiday checklist at Castellón's Camping Tauro. It's only 300 metres to the beach of Playa del Heliópolis from the site, for times on sands and in sea, as well as fishing from the rocky piers nearby. The other award-winning beaches of Benicàssim are under 10 minutes' drive away; more seaside towns such as Oropesa del Mar, Torreblanca, Villafamés and Peñiscola are within easy day trip distance, and the spectacular city of Valencia is just under an hour's drive in the other direction along the coast. Camping Tauro is family-run, with over 30 years' experience looking after guests. It's a good-sized site with a good range of facilities and amenities, from an outdoor pool and indoor games room to a roomy bar terrace and a well-stocked shop with local produce. There's a restaurant and a café-bar to keep you fed and watered, with takeaway available if you prefer to pick your own peaceful spot around the site. Other facilities include a playground and a pétanque court. Free showers, toilets, a launderette and a washing-up area are also on site.

Liked Campsite was great, there was everything that you need. We needed an adapter for the electric cable, the office lent us one free of charge. Near amenities and the beach was a short 10 minutes walk.

Disliked One of the toilet block was in need of updating. Standard Pitches were a bit small.

Liked Great vibe and really friendly, only stayed one night on our travels but felt very welcome by both staff and other guests. We were about to use our coal barbeque on the pitch which was a great bonus. We have added the site to our favourites for next year's travels.

Liked Lovely site and all facilities excellent and spotless clean. Bar and restaurant were well used and always plenty of people in eating. Swimming pool good. Friendly reception team who spoke fluent English. We will return next year. 9.5/10

Disliked Pitches were good but very tight to manoeuvre into with tree branches.

Local attractions

The fine white sands of Playa del Heliópolis are part of the six kilometres of award-winning beaches of Benicàssim, a scenic and popular seaside resort a short drive from the mountains. The town is the setting for the annual FIB music festival every July; if you're not around then, make your way just north for roams around the protected natural area and mountain range of the Desert of the Palms. More seaside resorts are to the east at Oropesa del Mar, just under 15 minutes' drive away, Torreblanca, within 25 minutes, Villafamés within 30 and Peñiscola, just under an hour from the site. This last is a particularly famed site for its rocky headland setting, separated from the mainland by a thin strip of land: go see, and take many snaps. If you're on Spanish holiday with the kids, Bioparc Valencia is 55 minutes' drive from the site, and the huge theme park of PortAventura an hour and a half.
