  • Peaceful site near Valencian vineyards, 15 mins’ drive from Villena
  • Less than an hour's drive from Alicante and Costa Blanca beaches
  • Outdoor pool, wifi throughout site, pétanque and social club
Las vacaciones close to the Valencian vineyards and 15 minutes’ drive from Villena – how very fab. Peaceful Camping Bola is a top spot to use as a base for explores around the area: the city of Alicante and the Costa Blanca beaches are less than an hour away, there are national parks and regional parks within 40 minutes, and a 15-kilometre cycle route starts less than five minutes from the site. And those vineyards? A good handful of Alicante Wine Route wineries are within half an hour for tipples and tours. With great wine goes great food, of course, and foodies will do well out of this region’s pickings too. Venture to Villena’s bars, restaurants and shops for stops to sample gachamiga, gazpacho and triguico, pastas, sausages, and olive oil, then poke around the rest of the city to get a taste of the culture and history. It’s a fine idea to pick up bits for a picnic spread back on site, where tables and benches are scattered among the mulberry and pine trees, with plenty of shade for afternoon siestas (or sipping wine and snacking). An outdoor pool is on site for cooling off if it gets a tad too warm. Want to share your good fortune with fellow guests? There’s a social club where you can hang out with pals old and new, before testing such friendships over a game of pétanque.

Local attractions

Wine is one of the real draws around here, so if you’re fond of a glass or few, plan out a couple of days wending your way between the wineries, picking up choice bottles as you go. A drive of between 10 minutes and half an hour will get you to several fine specimens (Bodega Las Virtudes, Bodegas Francisco Gómez, Bodega Sierra Salinas and Bodegas Casa Corredor all get the thumbs up). Work up a thirst for such treats by pedalling bikes along the 15-kilometre Via Verde del Chicharra (two minutes’ drive away), zooming around the Villena Circuito Chicharra Karts go-kart track (10 minutes) or taking strolls around the Sierra del Carche regional park (40 minutes). Surfing and sailing are an hour away in Campello. Aim to spend at least a day in Alicante (50 minutes) too, for beach times and seaside strolls, plus visits to the archaeology museum, ambles through the old town and a little detour to the Lucentum ruins, just outside the city. For a slice more history, swing back via the Castle of Biar (25 minutes).
