If you happen to be child-free (even if it’s for just the holidays) and looking forward to spending some time with only your significant other (and maybe the family dog), Villa Solar might be just the ticket.
This peaceful motorhome park, easily accessed via the AP-7 road, is a half-hour drive from Elx/Elche, in the southern reaches of the Valencian Community. Park your camper in one of the gravel pitches and take in the colourful landscape around you, a patchwork of agricultural plots growing artichokes, citrus fruit and alfalfa.
‘Eating the rainbow’ – as wellness gurus often instruct – should be fairly easy around these parts. You can buy locally grown vegetables at weekly markets like the one held in Almoradí (10 minutes’ drive) on Saturdays, or at Sunday’s Lemon Tree Market (20 minutes). Almoradí also has several restaurants, and for those who fancy tasting regional seafood dishes the Costa Blanca and its beaches can be reached in about 20 minutes.
In addition to a swimming pool and a dog park, the site has a communal fridge where you can store your market goodies ahead of an evening cookout at the barbecue area; there's also a covered terrace with picnic tables for alfresco dining. Other facilities include a toilet/shower block and washing-up stations.

Local attractions
You’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to outings around here. Outdoor enthusiasts will certainly want to bring their boots and binoculars along for the hiking trails and birdwatching areas of Parque Natural el Hondo (15 minutes’ drive) – and don't forget your camera as well for the striking colours of the Pink Lake Of Torrevieja (25 minutes).
Torrevieja (25 minutes) is also well known for its beaches – dog-friendly ones and watersports areas among them. There’s also the Aqua Park Ciudad Quesada (15 minutes) for a bit of fun splashing about, and La Marquesa Golf (15 minutes) for those whose holiday is not complete without putting a few balls along the way.
For a dip into the area’s culture, head to the Casa Museo de Miguel Hernández (35 minutes) or spend a day in Elche (half an hour), stopping by at the paleontological museum and Basílica de Santa Maria between visits to El Palmeral and Huerto del Cura gardens. Alicante (40 minutes) is also a good option for a day trip.
