A peaceful green setting among a shaded park and a lush location quite literally by the sea – sound like your sort of hol? Then have it sorted at the dog-friendly coastal site Alannia Costa Dorada, 10 kilometres south of L'Hospitalet de L'Infant in Tarragona and a 25-minute drive away from PortAventura. This splendid place has been welcoming guests since 1959 and is thus well versed in showing holidaymakers a cracking time – it’s kitted out with a heap of facilities for all ages, all right next door to Almadraba beach, hailed as being one of the quietest on the Costa Dorada. Kids might find they’d rather hang around at the playground – it’s got a big bug-themed ant slide to slither down, as well as swings and other fun kit to clamber on. Otherwise, there’s lots to do at the multisports area nearby, and kids’ activities are organised by the on-site team daily in the summer holidays. There are beach activities and games for all ages here in fact, plus regular shows and entertainment to fill your evenings. Also in the evenings, make your merry way to the restaurant for Mediterranean and regional cuisine – obviously, you’ll want to dine on that roomy sea-view terrace too – or stock up on groceries at the mini market to make your own meals. Most handily, car hire is available too should at any point you feel able to tear yourself away from all the fab family facilities here.

This is a pleasant campsite with direct beach access and friendly staff. While appreciated for mobile home rentals, some visitors found caravan pitches difficult and noted a lack of nearby shops. Hot water for washing up was unavailable for some, and ongoing renovations meant many facilities were closed. Dogs are permitted on site but not on the beach.

Family days are a cinch to sort from here: rent a car on site to be at PortAventura World in 25 minutes; fab family waterpark Aquópolis is a few minutes further, while within 40 minutes is the Jungle Trek treetop adventure park, one of the biggest in Catalonia. Fishing, watersports and sea swimming are all handily available nearby too, along with other land-based pursuits like hiking, cycling and exploring the Ebro Delta Natural Park wetland area. Drive a short distance inland to the Vandellòs’ Olive Oil Interpretation Centre: here you’ll learn about how this tasty stuff is produced through exhibits and talks by oil makers, and you’ll get to purchase the goods there afterwards too (time to stock up on your Spanish souvenirs if you’re feeling generous?).
