  • Two minutes' cycle from a river valley Via Verde
  • Wine-producing area with wine tours and cellars
  • Pool, recreation area, bike hire, bar-restaurant and play area
Tarragona's Càmping Terra Alta is surely one of the best around its region of Bot. For it's next to one of the most fantastic Via Verdes in Catalonia, a greenway running for around 90 kilometres from Alcañiz to Tortosa across the Canaletes river valley (it's a traffic-free trail so should lead to stress-free pedalling around the region with the offspring). More grownuply, the steep and dry landscapes of the region mean this is cracking wine-producing land too, with plenty of wine cellars and wine tours around for Spanish plonk fans. No to wine as a souvenir? The region also bottles up spiffing extra virgin olive oil: for drizzling rather than guzzling, obvs... And then there's the site setting. Terra Alta is separated into terraces all shaded with olive trees, with views most definitely on the spectacular scale – this is mountain and forest land so lush that you might recognise it from several paintings by Picasso (the surreal one used to hang out around this region in the summer months). Among all the landscape and greenery, Terra Alta has a pool to dip into on hot days, a recreation area to mingle at, a play area, and a TV for footie matches. Rather handily for a setting only a couple of minutes away from a Via Verde, bike hire is available on site. If you want to sample the regional cuisine as well as its wine and olive oil, the bar-restaurant serves seasonal products, grilled meat, sausages and charcuterie, all produced in the area.

Local attractions

The nearby Via Verde is two minutes' pedal from Terra Alta: you could just pedal off and get pleasantly lost, or have a more organised day out to one of the team's most fave spots on the route, La Fontcalda Sanctuary in the Canaletes river valley. The sanctuary centres around the remains of a 14th-century church, in a green area and church square near the river. A restaurant and bar are open during the summer and on weekends during spring. And there is of course also the wine… piles of wine cellars are around to tour, but if you don't want to travel/stagger too far, try the two at the site's local village: Cooperativa Agrícola Sant Josep and Celler Menescal. Around the Tarragona area you could travel along to the coast, spy the wildlife of the Ebro Delta Nature Park, or see how far you can get along the Penedès Wine and Cava Route, the trail with wine-based activities as well as local foodie festivals along its route. If you're a history buff, look for several sites and ruins locally relating to the Battle of the Ebro, the biggest and longest battle in the Spanish Civil War.
