A pretty place in the Pyrenees is what you can tick of your holiday essential checklist at Catalonia's Aigüestortes Camping Resort in the Lerida province… along with spectacular scenery (see pics), spacious pitches, and hikes and outdoor activities of all sorts all around… Water escapades are close to hand too, as the resort's Esterri d'Àneu setting is by Torrassa Lake; within a few minutes' saunter of the Noguera Pallaresa river, and under 20 kilometres from the famed waters of Lake San Mauricio in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. A pool is on site if you prefer your damp times very close to your holiday berth: there are separate areas for little squirts as well as bigger folk to suit all poolgoing sizes. Cleverly, the resort team has placed the pool next to the site cafeteria and facing the covered restaurant terrace… just in case you feel like a cold beer between dips or a stroll of a few seconds for access to fuelling up afterwards. Also at your leisurely disposal is a games room with table football, billiard, air hockey tables, TV and board games, and a playground in case the kids just aren't yet tuckered out enough. Esterri d'Àneu is 15 minutes' drive away.

Liked Excellent heated toilet/shower facilities, large area under cover outside so we could eat without getting wet, great customer service, even phoned to check we were on our way and that reception shut at 5pm so gave us all the info we needed in case we were later.👍

Liked Excellent facilities that are cleaned each day. Quick walk to the local village.

Disliked Arrived at 13:45 to find reception was closed between 13:30 and 15:30, so had to wait in the car park for just under 2 hours. Called the number at reception and was told just to wait…. should be clearly stated as we would’ve come earlier/later…

Local attractions

The site is niftily set in the centre of a Pyrenees valley, a short distance from the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the only such space in Catalonia. The Aigüestortes Camping Resort team recommends fishing or mushroom foraging to start your local activities off, followed by mountain biking, canoeing or rafting along and on the Noguera Pallaresa river. More canoeing is at Torrassa Lake, a minute or two's stroll from the site. Drive just under 10 kilometres north to reach local town Esterri d’Àneu for access to more outdoor days including descents of the ravine of the river valley. From Esterri, it's half an hour's drive to the riverside town of Sort, where there's a medieval castle, more Noguera Pallaresa watersports and a butterfly museum close by at Pujalt. For a more peaceful time, drive or hike around the area's small villages to see their stone houses and bridges: the resort team can point you in the right direction.
