  • Family-friendly site in the mountains of Lleida province, Catalonia
  • Segre-Noguera Pallaresa reservoir 35 minutes’ drive; Lleida 50 minutes
  • Swimming pool; playground with trampoline; communal barbecue
Sitting on the banks of the Segre river, Camping d’Alòs is a top spot to explore the Lleida province of Catalonia while also getting down to some serious R&R. Active types make the most of being right on the fringes of a vast area of mountains and nature reserves, with paths leading up forested hills and rocky cliffs with dramatic views of the river (below) and hovering vultures and goshawks (above). There are plenty of mountain-biking trails, too, including a pretty challenging one that takes you to the summit of Sant Mamet (35 minutes’ drive). If scrambling up a mountain isn’t your idea of a holiday, you can take it easier with a stroll along the pretty streets of the village of Alòs de Balaguer, just across the river (5 minutes’ drive, or a 20-minute walk), stopping at various observation decks to admire the surrounding mountains. Want to take it easier still? A poolside siesta back at the site might be more your speed… A playground with a trampoline and swings ought to keep the kids occupied while you stoke up the barbecue for dinner, having sourced provisions at Artesa de Segre (15 minutes) or Balaguer (half an hour). If the thought of cooking interferes with your holiday vibe, the on-site restaurant serves paellas, grilled meats and bocadillo sandwiches, plus tapas and beers. In addition to a well-maintained toilet block with facilities for disabled guests, there are showers and bathtubs, a washing-up area and a launderette.

Local attractions

Built in the Middle Ages, the Castell de Montclar (20 minutes’ drive) fortress was heavily renovated in the 17th century. Filled with suits of armour and medieval weapons, the halls of this national monument now host escape room-type adventures. It’s well worth spending some time exploring the shores of the Segre-Noguera Pallaresa reservoir (35 minutes). If you’re into caves, check out the Cova del Tabac, at the south westernmost tip of the lake; those who prefer watersports head to Platja de Vilanova de la Sal, where it’s possible to launch canoes and swim. The fortified citadel of Turo Seu Vella, sitting proudly atop a plateau, dominates the skyline of Lleida (50 minutes). The complex includes a medieval cathedral with an ornate belltower and the ruins of the Castell de la Suda fortress. After admiring the vintage cars in the Museo de la Automoción de Lérida, rest in the shade of the trees in the riverside Parc dels Camps Elisis.
