  • Well-equipped Catalonia site five minutes’ drive from Àger village
  • Montsec Astronomical Park 10 minutes’ drive; Lleida 50 minutes
  • Fitness centre, outdoor pool and massage room; yoga classes; play area
Just across the C-12 motorway from the village of Àger (five minutes’ drive or 15 minutes’ walk), Camping Vall d’Àger sits at the foot of the Serra del Montsec range, in the north western corner of Catalonia. Take a minute to look around and admire the splendid mountainous landscape that surrounds you. Wait… is that a paraglider flying in the distance? Chances are the answer’s yes, for this is a popular area to practise this extreme sport, so if you’ve always fancied having a go, you’re in the right place, with several outfits arranging tandem flights. If you’d rather spend your holiday with your feet on the ground, there’s no shortage of hiking trails in the mountains, including the path going up to the centuries-old Ermita De Pedra church (10 minutes) and the rather challenging climb up to the Coll d’Ares (25 minutes). Keep your eyes peeled for birds of prey such as vultures and peregrine falcons. After scrambling up the mountains, you might well be in need of a little TLC. Back at the site, you can book yourself in for a massage or relax as you float around in the outdoor pool. Meanwhile, those who still have energy to burn can join an alfresco yoga class or do some cardio in the fitness centre, before hitting the restaurant. There’s lots for the kids, too, with a play area with swings, slides and climbing structures, plus a five-a-side football pitch and a padel court. The site comes with all necessary amenities – from a toilet block with showers (and facilities for disabled guests), to a washing-up area and a launderette.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Nice view of the stars and town, good facilities for high/summer season I imagine. Peaceful and quiet.

Disliked: We had drove 4 hours to reach this place and intended to stay for a few days to explore the surrounding area. When arrived just after 6pm, there reception was closed, which isnt a problem as its low season so we appreciate receptions wont always be open in low season, although on Pitchup it said reception til 8pm. We tried the phone number on the confirmation 3 times with no answer, before i walked into the camp and found a number on the door. Called the new number and the lady was quite abrupt, and seemed surprised to have a booking or that we were waiting. We had to wait 30 minutes to be let in, and made to feel like an inconvenience and quite unwelcome. At 12pm (check out) all electric was switched off and not even a nod or a hello from owner as we were packing up to leave. Just didn't feel a very nice vibe. My suggestion would be to update to the correct phone number on the confirmation email, and add timings for out of season guests. And maybe put the vehicle license as automated to allow guests who have paid and travelled some distance to stay. Equally, if guests are an inconvenience in low season, then do not advertise for availability in low season. For 28Euro a night without electric, and because of unfriendly welcome - I would not stay here again nor recommend it.

Local attractions

For spectacular views of the night sky above the mountain range, head to the Montsec Astronomical Park (10 minutes’ drive), where guided sessions will help you identify stars and constellations. During your visit you'll also learn about the high-tech equipment and explore the astronomy exhibition. A protected nature area of limestone cliffs at the confluence of the Noguera Pallaresa and Segre rivers, Aiguabarreig Segre-Noguera Pallaresa (35 minutes) is a popular hiking destination, with trails leading up to observation points like the Mirador del Balconet. If you’re lucky you might also spot the occasional otter or pine marten on your walks. The city of Lleida (50 minutes) is dominated by the Seu Vella, a centuries-old cathedral with a decorated bell tower, and the Castell de la Suda fortress, parts of which date back to the ninth century. Join the locals as they relax in the shade in Parc dels Camps Elisi, stretching along the banks of the Segre river.
