It’s not often you have a sleepover in a farmyard, especially not one in Costa Brava countryside with mountain views, but that’s the deal at Autocaravaning La Granja, a family-friendly site set on a working family farm in Catalonia. Chances are you’ll soon become firm pals with the free-range hens and friendly furry donkeys who share their space with you too. Amenities at this simple spot include well-kept pitches, a shower block and laundry facilities (both the latter incur a small fee), drinking water and electricity, but what it lacks in luxury it makes up for in location. Set on the outskirts of lively Torroella de Montgrí, this is a good base for hiking and cycling. The site is 10 minutes’ drive from sandy Platja de l’Estartit beach, a golf course and hiking/cycling trails in the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park. The historic centre of Torroella de Montgrí is only 15 minutes' walk away too; it has a handful of museums and restaurants serving tasty local food. Top up on any vital supplies in the shops and weekly market before moving on to your next destination. Equally well, there’s so much to see and do (and indeed eat) here that it’s well worth sticking around for a few days to explore this enticing corner of Catalonia in depth.

Liked Belle et surprenante expérience en fourgon aménagé dans ce lieu atypique. Grands emplacements, ombragé ou pas, dans une cours de ferme. Propre, calme, quelques gentilles poules et d'adorables ânes comme compagnons, un accueil chaleureux, tout y est pour passer un excellent séjour. Très bon emplacement pour randos vélos vers les villages environnants (Pals, Begur, Estartit....) sur de supers pistes.

Man hatte alles was man braucht,die Betreiber haben alles sehr liebevoll hergerichtet.Super fand ich die Sanitäre Anlage war in einem ehemaligen Melkstall eingerichtet.Es war wirklich alles sehr sauber.

Heritage-wise, you have 14th-century churches and a Neoclassical monastery to investigate in historic Banyoles (45 minutes’ drive), as well as a brace of science and archaeological museums. When you’re all cultured out, find a pavement café in colonnaded Plaça Major and order a strong cup of coffee or something chilled for refuelling purposes. More urban adventures are to be had in Girona (also 45 minutes), where you can tour the Moorish-style Banys Àrabs, and have a wander among the ornate fountains of the landscaped Jardins de la Devesa. Kids on board? Check out the family-friendly nature and sculpture trails in Parc de les Ribes del Ter. If you’d prefer to explore on foot, stop off at impressive Montgrí Castle (50 minutes’ walk) to admire views down to the Mediterranean Sea before heading onto the myriad of hiking trails in the rocky Montgrí Massif. Golfers can content themselves with a few rounds on the coastal course at Empordà (10 minutes’ drive), while cyclists pedal the trails through the lush Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park (25 minutes by bike).
