When hols within easy reach of sandy beaches, diverting waterparks and major cities beckon, heed the call and make tracks for Camping Canyelles, a family-friendly site four kilometres (about 10 minutes’ drive) from the Catalan town of Lloret de Mar. It’s about 350 metres from the site’s entrance to the nearest sandy cove, which should have guests feeling sand between toes within a five-minute walk. Less mobile guests don’t have to miss out on the seaside frolics either… A free shuttle bus can be caught on site, ferrying people from pitch to platja (Catalan for beach) in just a few minutes. More water-filled days can be had nearby, with two waterparks within 25 minutes’ drive. It’s 10 minutes to Water World’s slides, rides and swims, and 25 minutes to the dolphin shows, exotic birds, slides and pools of Marineland Catalunya. Of course, guests can always cool off in the on-site pool if further flung trips aren’t on the cards – the large pool has slides and water features, and is right next to the bar-restaurant when ice cream or cool drinks are needed. Guests who prefer to stay in the dry are well served here too: days can be spent on the miniature sports court, watching sports on the giant TV screen in the bar or soaking up views towards the sea. If cravings mount for home-cooked meals, a trip to the on-site supermarket will see guests sorted with fresh local and international produce, essentials and souvenirs, and the in-store bakery has a range of bread and pastries to choose from.

Local attractions

There’s plenty round here to fill days, starting with a trip into Lloret de Mar, 10 minutes’ drive away. The town has beaches if you're still yearning for more sandy time, and its clifftop gardens, kids’ theme park and busy nightlife are all worth experiencing. It’s also a major jumping-off point for boat trips to Blanes, Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guíxols during high season. Prefer to stick to the road network? It’s 15 minutes from base to Tossa de Mar to explore the traditional fishing village’s walled Old Town, visit its lighthouse and lounge about on beaches. Costa Brava ‘gateway’ Blanes, with its beaches, watersports, botanic gardens, hilltop castle and old seafront, is 20 minutes away. More keen on shopping and urban explores? Guests can be in the city of Girona within 50 minutes, wandering the fortified Old Town, crossing the Gustave Eiffel-designed bridge, visiting museums and burning holes in credit cards. Longer jaunts can be taken to Barcelona (an hour and 25 minutes) for the Catalan capital’s famed sites, including the spectacular La Sagrada Familia and a whole host of other Gaudí masterpieces.
