Costa Brava coves and Catalan sightseeing are on the menu at Cala Gogo, a family-friendly holiday park a few metres from a scenic sandy beach. The resort is set just outside the small town of Platja d'Aro, a popular coastal spot with bars, restaurants and shops that are all a five-minute drive or bus ride away from base. This action-packed spot has a well-rounded high-season entertainment programme that should keep the kids happy for hours. Grownup guests are also catered for here, with activities including fitness classes and watersports like scuba diving. If you'd rather organise your leisure time yourself, you may find that Cala Gogo's mix of outdoor pools, multisports pitches and games rooms do rather nicely. It isn't a long walk to the beach by any stretch of the imagination, but if you're here with younger kids who tire out easily (or are still sleepy from a siesta…) you can catch the free land train that shuttles travellers between the pools and the sea. You're also a couple of kilometres away from Roques Planes, a peaceful headland made up of rockier coves that are excellent for snorkelling. Another plus: the site has well-maintained facilities for practical jobs like food shopping and laundry to help you spend as much time as possible by the pool or on your beach of choice.

Local attractions

Small kids looking for somewhere to cool off in warm weather can be taken to Parc Aquàtic Aquadiver (30 minutes' walk/five minutes' drive), a family-friendly waterpark on the edge of Platja d'Aro. There's also a small-size miniature golf course in town; those looking for a full-scale links should head to Pitch & Putt Mas Torrellas (10 minutes). If you've come with a bike, you might like to pedal along the seafront to the neighbouring town of Palamós (20 minutes' cycle/10 minutes' drive), passing several historic towers on the way. Once you've arrived, head to the fishing museum by the port before drifting over to the seafood market next door and putting what you've learned to good use. You're not far from cultural sites here either, and it's well worth heading to Girona (30 minutes) where there's a bunch of historic monuments, museums, churches and galleries to explore. Spain's second city, Barcelona (an hour and 20 minutes), is also well within reach, as are pretty towns in the Pyrenean foothills like Besalú (an hour and 10 minutes) and Olot (an hour and 20 minutes).
