  • Peaceful wildlife haven surrounded by oak forest, close to Portugal
  • In the Sierra de la Culebra UNESCO biosphere reserve
  • Pools, sports areas and restaurant serving homemade food and grills
Wildlife – and wolf – watchers… this is the spectacular Spanish site for you. The peaceful Camping Sierra de la Culebra is a stellar spot for wildlife watching and spying species of all sorts, as it’s set between five (sí, five) conservation areas: the Sierra de la Culebra, the Lagunas de Villafáfila natural reserve, Sanabria Lake (one of the few natural lakes in Spain), the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, and Montesinho Natural Park just over the border in Portugal. Look out for deer and wild boar in the surroundings, go foraging for mushrooms or chestnuts, or keep your eyes peeled for loping Iberian wolves; this is their most populous habitat in Europe. Camping Sierra de la Culebra is a green, scenic and colourful place in a quiet oak forest in Castile and Leon’s Zamora Province, among the landscapes of the Iberian Plateau UNESCO biosphere reserve. Local village Figueruela de Arriba is a couple of kilometres away; elsewhere, Zamora is an hour’s drive away and Portugal’s Bragança 50 minutes. An adult pool, a paddling pool, a playground, a football field, a sports court and tennis courts are on site for when you/the kids want to take energy levels up a notch. A firm no to that? Set your sights on the Encina de Figueruela restaurant instead, where traditional homemade cuisine and locally sourced produce like lamb, steaks and wild mushrooms are all dished up from the grill. Breakfast, bread and veggie/vegan eats are covered here as well, as are takeaways to bear back to your berth – and local wines to sip under the stars: this is prime stargazing territory too.

Local attractions

That list of conservation areas caught your eye? Enlist the help of the folk on site to sort days of hiking, biking, Nordic walking, kayaking and climbing in the surrounds, plus wildlife watching trips. If you're here at the right time of year, you can also sign up to forage for your supper in the Sierra de la Culebra reserve (with expert help to steer you clear of any dubious mushrooms along the way…). If you'd like to see the place at your own pace, it’ll take you 15 minutes to drive to Peña Mira, the Sierra de la Culebra’s highest point, for some splendid views (especially in spring, when it wears a colourful coat of lavender and heather). Arribes del Duero Natural Park (50 minutes) and the vast Sanabria Lake (55 minutes) are other good options for a stroll. Not spotted any wolves as you wander? Up your chances with a visit to the Centro del Lobo Ibérico de Castilla y León (55 minutes), where you can see some hanging out in a semi wild setting.
