  • Bungalows 10 minutes’ drive from Cabañas Raras in the province of León
  • Ponferrada Castle 20 minutes’ drive; Peñalba de Santiago 55 minutes
  • Go-karts, paintball and play area; bar-restaurant and chill-out zone
If you’ve got active kids and you’re not sure what to do with them over summer, how about staying at Las Villas del Karting, 10 minutes’ outside Cabañas Raras in León province? What with go-kart tracks suitable for all ages, and paintball challenges for groups of friends or family, chances are you’ll never have a moment to catch your breath all holiday. And the fun doesn’t stop there. Younger kids can wear themselves out in the indoor soft-play area, and families can hire e-bikes to pedal off through the León countryside in search of vineyards to tour. The bar-restaurant – where there’s often live music – is the focal point of family meals, serving up Argentine-style barbecue feasts using locally reared produce, and close by there’s a covered chill-out terrace for when you finally feel the need to relax after all that activity. Of course, you can always retreat to your comfy bungalow, sleeping up to six and with a well-equipped kitchen if you feel like rustling up something tasty of your own. There’s ample living and dining space, bedrooms with storage, ensuite bathrooms and outside seating areas. Supermarkets and pharmacies are found in Cabañas Raras, which – should you fancy a change of scenery – also has a choice of bars and restaurants.

Local attractions

If you’re looking for more sporty stuff to do, try your hand at ‘proper’ tennis or padel tennis on the courts at Cubillos del Sil (10 minutes’ drive), or head for ambles through oak and cork forests at Fuente del Ciervo (also 10 minutes). Embalse de Bárcena reservoir (20 minutes) is gateway to numerous rather-more-strenuous hiking and mountain biking routes. Take your offspring swimming from the river beach at Cacabelos, or on sightseeing jaunts to Ponferrada Castle (both 20 minutes), where they can poke around towers and ramparts while you view a copy of the illuminated Book of Kells in the library. Check out the mountain views from the alpine village of Peñalba de Santiago (55 minutes), renowned for the wooden balconies on its aged cottages, and take the kids on a short family-friendly ramble to the shrine in San Genadio Cave. If you’re holidaying over winter, rumour has it that Father Christmas sometimes visits Canedo Palace (20 minutes, don’t tell the kids), but whether that’s true or not, this wine estate is open year-round for tours, tasting and picking up local produce in its tempting gift shop.
