  • Clifftop Cantabria glampsite with sea and Picos de Europa views
  • Las Arenas Beach five minutes’ walk, and Santander 45 minutes’ drive
  • Swimming pool and play area; restaurant, café bar and supermarket
Spectacular views and a beach nearby sound good to you? Then let’s have a look at Camping Las Arenas in Cantabria. With a backdrop of jagged Picos de Europa mountain peaks and an impressive clifftop location overlooking Ría de Tina Mayor estuary, the glampsite is a gentle five minutes’ stroll to sunbathing, surfing waves and rock-pooling expeditions at Las Arenas Beach. But wait, for things get even better. Sleek and spacious accommodation – bed linen, towels, hanging space and storage all provided – comes in a mix of sizes and styles suitable for everyone, be you travelling solo, as a couple or with the kids. All your holiday needs are catered for too: the pitches are shaded by holm oaks and pines, giving you the chance to chill in pristine natural surroundings. Your days may be spent keeping an eye on the kids running riot in the play area, or drifting between the beach and the on-site swimming pool – and if you’d like a little adults-only time, there’s organised entertainment your children in high season. Foodwise, tuck into tapas sharing plates with your other half in the café bar, or enjoy a romantic supper overlooking the Cantabrian Sea at the terrace restaurant. The supermarket will help you keep stocked up on camping essentials, but if there is anything else you need, the small but lively town of Unquera is only five minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Any exploration of this untamed corner of Cantabria should start with a clifftop stroll to the village of Pechón (25 minutes’ walk), appreciating the coastal views as you go – once there, peep into Santa María de los Ángeles church to see its magnificent Baroque-era altarpiece. If you need to cool off on the return journey, stop by remote Playa de Pechón beach for a refreshing dip in the small, sheltered bay. You can also explore locally along the Deva River and the Tina Mayor estuary by sailing boat, canoe or kayak, while any anglers among you may like to try fishing for sea bass, bream and salmon. Seafood is something of a regional speciality, with fresh clams and hearty tuna stew on the menu in the restaurants of Santander (45 minutes), where you may also like to see great art at the gleaming Renzo Piano-designed Centro Botín or spend a lazy day basking in the sun on El Sardinero beach with the kids. If you need more inspiration for family days out, make a beeline for Cabárceno Wildlife Park (40 minutes), laid out on the site of a former open-cast mine. Take a cable-car ride over the whole compound to spot endangered species including African elephants and white rhinos, or join a driven safari through their spacious enclosures.

Emperador Junior bell tent

Liked: The location was great

Disliked: We were hoping for a peaceful and relaxed stay, but the campsite is crammed with tents too close to each other so there is little private space, and there appeared no management of traffic with cars driving too fast around the site and parking all over the place not in the provided car parks. This meant it was noisy til late with engines and doors shutting and really spoiled our experience The staff were helpful when we asked to move tent due to our first one being almost in a car park, but overall we would not recommend Kampaoh Las Arenas
