  • Glampsite at Playa de Oyambre surfing beach in Oyambre Natural Park
  • Art nouveau Comillas 10 minutes’ drive; Santander dining 45 minutes
  • Surfing school with gear rental; licensed snack bar and playground
Set in Oyambre Natural Park, the small enclave of glamping tents at Kampaoh Oyambre overlooks the sweeping sandy crescent of Playa de Oyambre, 45 minutes’ drive west from Santander and one of the most popular surfing beaches along the Cantabrian coastline. So what comes with your Kampaoh reservation? Sea views, luxurious accommodation all set up for your arrival and well-equipped with memory mattresses on double beds, duvets, storage, a cosy seating area and lighting. Useful extras include extension cords, plugs, outdoor lamps, a mirror, crockery and a cooler to transport your picnics to the beach – in short, the tents are furnished with pretty much everything you need for a break under canvas, so you’ll only need to bring clothes and food. Outside each tent is a private-use picnic table, while family-friendly facilities include a café-bar for the doling out of all-day snacks, plus a modern facilities block, washing-up sinks and a laundry room. There’s also a small playground for toddlers, but the biggest USP here is the on-site surfing school, where you can rent boards and get out onto those renowned Playa de Oyambre waves.

Local attractions

If you’re keen to mug up on some Cantabrian culture, get yourselves off to Comillas (10 minutes’ drive), a rural town set among lush hills and with an Insta-worthy collection of art nouveau buildings. Look out for the pink-stone Capilla Panteón de los Marqueses de Comillas and the landmark El Capricho Villa, festooned with coloured mosaics and designed by Antoni Gaudí, the architect of Barcelona fame. To taste the flavours of northern Spanish cuisine, head to the hallowed gourmet city of Santander (45 minutes). Here you can gorge on Basque-style pintxos skewers in cosy tiled tapas bars, celebrate special occasions in award-winning restaurants, or taste salt cod and Txakoli Basque wine at traditional bodegas decorated with wine barrels and wooden beams. If you’d prefer to explore the region on foot, take a stroll along the sandy beaches, dunes and river estuaries of Oyambre Natural Park straight from your pitch – and of course, your board awaits for some high-octane surfing action just off Playa de Oyambre.
