Ah, the simple things in life: mountain views, lush greenery as far as the eye can see, local wines and tapas, and long hikes and wilderness walks around the Aragon Pyrenees… And that's the vibe Camping Valle de Bujaruelo is going for: simple yet sophisticated in a spectacularly scenic setting. Set upon a terraced hillside within the Monte Perdido UNESCO World Heritage Site in Huesca, Bujaruelo's Ordesa-Viñamala Biosphere Reserve surroundings are excellent for wildlife spotting and birdwatching. It's also a superb spot for exploring the canyons and peaks of the Bujaruelo valley, with hikes, nature trails, mountain bike tracks and 4x4 routes accessible right from the site. For a spot of sustenance at the end of a long day of adventures, sit down to a three-course meal of traditional Spanish fare washed down with a local wine (or dos, or tres). If you're after something a little lighter, head to the cosy bar for a good selection of boozy beverages and tapas dishes – including the regional favourite, Torla black pudding – or procure yourself some local produce for an alfresco bite at the picnic area. The amenities at Bujaruelo are hailed as being well maintained and sparklingly clean, and the Turbón fountain provides guests with drinkable springwater straight from source.

Route directions

From Torla, follow the road towards Ordesa National Park. At Navarros Bridge, follow the woodland path for 3.5 kilometres and you'll then see Camping Valle de Bujaruelo. From the GR 11, you will find the site on the right bank of the Ara river, by the Otal Peak and close to Los Abetos bridge.

Local attractions

The site's spectacular hillside setting is one of plenty of long hikes into the surrounding foothills, such as along the GR 11 and the Ibon de Bernatuara. While you're on your walks, keep a beady eye out for griffon vultures, golden eagles, hawks and royal owls – this area is a top spot for birdwatchers. The Cola de Caballo waterfall and its surrounding beech woodlands are 25 kilometres by car or 14 kilometres on foot, with lots of hiking routes and cirques lasting anywhere between two and six hours, taking you from the car park through forested hillsides past several waterfalls. If you're into your snow sports then you're in luck too – there are several ski destinations within easy reach, including the large resort of Panticosa (49 kilometres), which has an impressive 690 metres of vertical descent and five kilometres of cross-country ski trails.
