Costa del Sol calling? Book yourself into the luxury bell tents at Kampaoh Marbella and you’re promised a quiet, family-friendly environment, set in dense pine forest yet just 20 minutes’ walk from sandy Calahonda Beach… with the added bonus of lively hotspots Marbella and Fuengirola both within 20 minutes’ drive. Once you’ve settled into your tree-shaded, spacious bell tent – sleeping up to six, all with comfy beds, storage and hanging space for your gear – there’s no real need to stir from the campsite if you don’t feel like it. Everything’s on hand, starting with the two-in-one swimming pool – covered and heated in winter, open in summer. Laze in the sauna, oversee the toddlers in Partylandia ball pool, kick a ball around on the sports field or join in with free daily activities at the outdoor gym. And the on-site good life doesn’t end there. Keep everyone topped up food-wise at the coffee bar and the Italian or Indian restaurants. Yes, you have three choices, so hopefully there will be something that suits the kids – especially if you stock up on snacks and ice creams at the shop… which also sells a good line in beachwear essentials, by the way.

Local attractions

Should you wish to explore without jumping in the car, follow raised boardwalks across the protected Artola Dunes (10 minutes’ walk) to the landmark Torre Ladrone watchtower (15 minutes), which was built in the late-15th century as part of the coastal defences. When you’ve had your fill of Mediterranean Sea views from the tower, head for the tapas bars and tavernas of Cabopino Marina (20 minutes), or dress up to hit the upscale port of Puerto Banús (20 minutes’ drive), where you can browse designer boutiques and admire superyachts in the marina. In the mood for culture? Kampaoh Marbella is 45 minutes’ drive from buzzy Málaga and its spectacular art museums, including Picasso’s Birthplace Museum, the glass-built Centre Pompidou Málaga and the Carmen Thyssen Museum, which specialises in Andalusian art. When you’re travelling with young kids, forgo the museums and have some fun on the beach at the lively Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola (20 minutes), then let them run around on bouncy castles and cartoon-themed carousels at Sould Park Fuengirola.
