  • Family-friendly beachside campsite at Mazagón on the Costa de la Luz
  • Playa de Mazagón five minutes’ drive; Doñana National Park 10 minutes
  • Swimming pool, breakfast service, beach bar and restaurant
Based in Mazagón on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and just 10 minutes' drive from the forests and dunes of Doñana National Park, Camping Playa de Mazagón is a wildlife haven within easy reach of kilometres of beaches, still in their wild state and with fine, golden sand and clean waters. Booking a stay on this family campsite (with some shaded pitches and others with sea views) puts you near to historic Huelva (25 minutes’ drive) too. There’s much to keep you entertained on site too, should you simply choose to chill. Organised events and entertainment are on hand at the kids’ club, and a range of eating options takes you from morning until night. Source breakfast churros and afternoon ice creams from the snack shack, and tapas from the casual ‘chiringuito’ beach bar, while the terrace restaurant serves up paella along with sea views. When you want a dip, wander over to the swimming pool, which also has Balinese-style loungers on the surrounding sun deck. If you fancy a splash in the sea, there’s a choice of six sandy Costa de la Luz beaches within 20 minutes’ drive, as well as the more remote stretch of Playa del Espigón (45 minutes). Handy family-friendly facilities on site include a laundry room for keeping on top of chores, and a supermarket selling food, drinks and camping essentials.

Non-electric sand pitch

Liked: Great campsite beside the Atlantic ocean and beautiful beaches. Lovely, friendly, helpful hosts. Beautiful new toilet block, spotlessly clean facilities with lots of hot water. Great wifi.

Disliked: Don't follow the direstions on pitch up it led us through the forestry track and the road was disgraceful, dangerous and all holes. We thought at one point we were not going to make it (in a motorhome). The address on pitch up does not correspond with the address of the campsite and the pitch up address is not recognised by car sat nav or phone sat nav.

Local attractions

Mazagón (five minutes’ drive) is a quiet, low-key Costa de la Luz resort with a pretty yachting harbour to potter around, lots of family-friendly tapas bars to investigate and restaurants serving fresh local seafood. The town’s real USPs, however, are the long sandy beaches, stretching from Playa de Mazagón (also five minutes) east to Playa de Cuesta Maneli (15 minutes). For sightseeing days among untamed nature, make for Doñana National Park (10 minutes) to hike or cycle among ever-shifting dunes and pine groves. Be sure to take binoculars too, as you're likely to spot bright-pink flamingos among the coastal marshlands. In summer, explore deep into the park on boat trips up the Ría de Huelva (20 minutes). Make time for a stop at the typically Andalusian white village of El Rocío (35 minutes) to admire the ornate Santuario Nuestra Señora del Rocío pilgrimage church. Head for Huelva (25 minutes) to wander around the Barrio Reina Victoria, a photogenic mix of Arabic and English architecture, follow the madcap sculpture trail in Zafra Park, and wind up your day with coffee in one of Paseo de Santa Fe’s alfresco cafés.
