Swim, eat and repeat at Camping Puerta de la Alpujarra, a site with outdoor pools and a top tapas restaurant set among a valley of old olive trees on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. About an hour from gorgeous Granada – and with gorgeous scenery all around – it’s no wonder the Moors chose to colonise this region back in the AD 700s. See traces of their culture in the nearby whitewashed, flat-roofed villages arranged on staggered terraces. The closest is Órgiva, the capital of the Las Alpujarras area (five minutes’ drive), which hosts a pop-up market and is home to authentic restaurants. The food here (both in the village and at the site) really is something to write home about. There are plenty of plates typical of the region on offer at the park – more than 40, to be exact. Dine on the site, admiring the renovations made in 2020, or relax in the lawn areas while looking out over mountains. Trekking is a popular activity here because of the stunning countryside and spring-like microclimate. Head off on hikes without a guide or sign up for one of the site’s walking excursions. The park also organises canoeing, quad bike tours, paintballing, cycling, archery, climbing and abseiling. Alternatively, you could always take a trip to the coast around Motril (40 minutes) or navigate north towards the unmissable heritage site of Alhambra in Granada, reachable in 55 minutes.

Local attractions

Spend days exploring the Moorish architecture of the Alpujarras villages from this site. Some of the most well known are in the Poqueira Valley – set off towards Pampaneira for craft shops; Bubión to see the huge square church tower; and Capileira for a wander through the narrow alleyways (all under half an hour’s drive). The area is also ace for ambling. When out on walks, keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats and the colourful hoopoe bird with its crown of feather. Next, venture further into the hills to try the jamón serrano – a type of ham famed throughout Spain – at Trevélez, the highest village in Europe with views overlooking a steep valley (55 minutes). While it may feel like you’re far from the coast at this site, you’re most definitely not. Southern Spain’s sandy Costa del Sol beaches are a mere 40 minutes’ drive away. Head to Playa de la Cagadilla near Motril to dip your toes in the Mediterranean; a little way along the coast from here is Nerja, known for its impressively large cave complex (50 minutes).
