  • Overnight stop for tourers and campervans in Castell de Ferro
  • Almuñécar 35 minutes’ drive; an hour to Granada for Alhambra visits
  • Well-kept facilities 10 minutes’ walk from Castell de Ferro beach
Keeping your caravan, motorhome or campervan cool in the summer heat can sometimes be tricky along Andalusia’s Costa Tropical – but the gravel pitches at Area Camper Castell have been set up especially to deal with such situations. At this site in Castell de Ferro you’ll park your rolling home under a handy canvas shade to protect you from the heat of the day – and you’ll also have access to water and an independent electric hookup. Right opposite the pitches are the whitewashed facilities, with smart, spacious marble bathrooms and showers. With other handy amenities including a washing-up sink, launderette and drainage for grey and black water waste, you should be pretty much sorted for services here. There is another way to keep cool in this area, of course – and that’s to get in the sea. This plan of action is easily achieved, as Castell de Ferro beach is 10 minutes’ stroll away for swims and lazy days on the sand (perhaps picking up a paella from the chiringuito restaurant on the beach if you get peckish while you’re there). If you’d rather do your own cooking, you can pick up all the bits you need from a supermarket five minutes’ walk away. Away from the local beach, there are plenty of other stretches of coastline to explore nearby, including the lively resort of Almuñécar (35 minutes’ drive). Other days out might take you to Granada (an hour) to see the spectacular Alhambra, or for hikes in one of the area’s natural parks.

Liked: Nothing really there to like or dislike very quiet site.

Disliked: Showers and toilets are terrible they are constantly flooded the floor is always wet... The public can see straight into the showers as the doors open the wrong way also the toilet might as well be in the street ... Terrible, really no thought has gone into the privacy of the campers... Not recommend we left 6 days early out of a 11 night booking...

Local attractions

The beach here is a lovely one, but proper beach buffs might like to stretch their sights out to other local options, like the snorkelling hotspot of Playa de La Rijana (five minutes’ drive) or the resort of Almuñécar (35 minutes), which has subtropical gardens, a bird park and the Aquatropic waterpark as well as its beach. Heading inland, there are various options for hikes in the craggy landscapes of Parque Natural de las Sierras de Tejeda (half an hour), which is also a great area to spot wildlife including eagles, bats and mountain goats. Try also to plan a full day out in Granada (an hour) – as well as being home to the Alhambra (the most-visited attraction in Spain), this gorgeous Moorish-influenced city has lots of lovely little spots to explore in the Albaicin neighbourhood, some well-preserved Arab baths and several fabulous churches (including the cathedral).
