General

  • Peaceful and friendly site overlooking Andalucia's largest reservoir
  • Lake watersports and climbing, rafting and canyoning in Benamejí
  • Smashingly scenic terrace restaurant serving homegrown organic cuisine

Some rather spesh scenic vistas towards the Iznájar reservoir are this site’s big draw – as well as its super friendly owners and lush setting at the entrance to the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, and lots of outdoor activities within 20 minutes’ drive.

Surrounded scenically by mountains and wooded foothills, the vast manmade water expanse of Iznájar is Andalusia’s largest, making for an excellent base for outdoorsy sorts to pitch up in pursuit of an active hol, as walking, horse riding and cycling, plus swimming, sailing and kayak and pedalo hire are available on and around the lake.

For when sandside relaxing and building with buckets and spades is the pastime of choice, the golden sands of Valdearenas Beach are a mere 25-minute drive east around the shoreline; instead, for yet more adrenalised action on and around the Genil river, head in the opposite direction to an outdoor adventure centre in Benamejí to try out activities like whitewater rafting, via ferrata climbing and paddleboarding... Or confidently combine them all and have a crack at canyoning.

Back at base, muy muy bien an outdoor pool is on site too for cooling dips and lots of on-site unwinding at its roomy grass terrace, all among heaps of lush Mediterranean greenery for max relaxation factor.

Elsewhere, those with tiddlers in tow can pack their offspring off to befriend other small guests at the site’s playground, and during the busiest season, the park’s friendly and extremely accommodating team (say enthused previous guests) organises themed evenings and activities both in and out of the pool for guests’ on-site amusement.

When hunger strikes, reasonably priced and toppingly tasty local eats made using hosts Mati and Barto’s homegrown organic produce are available from the park’s lovely licensed restaurant and its splendid terrace, where you can sit back and enjoy an evening aperitif (the mojitos especially are mucho quaffsome) while gazing admiringly upon your fab lakeside setting.

Local attractions

The smashing lakeside setting of this site gives way to many an outdoor pursuit in the locale: on land, horse riding, hiking and cycling are popular options, while on the water canoeing/kayaking, sailing and pedalo rental are all topping activities around. Away from the lake, guests can test their mettle with whitewater rafting, canyoning and clambering up via ferrata climbing routes on and around the Genil river.

Camping La Isla’s smashingly spectacular Andalucia setting, around 15 minutes’ drive from the southern edge of Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, is also a little over an hour's drive from inland spots such as Córdoba and Granada for urbanised days around historic cities. Another easy excursion option is an hour’s road trip to the lively port city of Málaga on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol; heaps of kid-friendly activities and attractions lie around the coastline here, including several waterparks for slipping, sliding and swimming, or the seeking of thrills among the 40 family-friendly amusements at Tivoli World theme park.

Should one be of a foodie persuasion, tours to sample the local gastronomy are highly recommended: Rute is famed across the land for its tasty and traditionally produced brandies and liquors, and the area is also known for its abundance of olive oil and charcuterie meats.
