Bed down in style close to one of Andalusia’s most scenic villages – and with lake views thrown in as well – at Kampaoh Lago de Arcos. This stylish glamping site is about 500 metres from the shoreline of Embalse de Arcos de la Frontera and four kilometres from the village of the same name. Arcos de la Frontera is known as one of the prettiest of the area’s ‘pueblos blancos’, and from this site you’ll be able to drive up there in a little over five minutes, or walk up in about 45 minutes. The village is part of the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos too, so your tent makes a good base for getting out to explore them all. With the site being located in the Paraje Natural de la Cola del Pantano, there are plenty of natural landscapes around for walks and wildlife spotting as well. This location is a lovely one for relaxation, with a lake beach close by where you can chill out. It’s a good location for activity too – just by the beach is an activity centre with various watersports and mountain outings to choose from. Life on site has a similar mix, as the facilities include a swimming pool and playground as well as a café-bar for easy meals and drinks. Your accommodation is designed to make life easy as well – each one has been kitted out with beds (with bed linen and towels provided), lighting and furnishings, along with handy extras including a heater and a fridge.

Local attractions

A wander (or drive) up to Arcos de la Frontera should be your first outing, of course – it’s one of the most gorgeous of Andalusia’s ‘pueblos blancos’, in a dramatic setting up on a limestone cliff. Take a look out over the valley from the viewpoint, then stop in at the town’s churches as you wander through the maze of streets and stop for tapas and drinks along the way. Also on your list of places to visit should be Ubrique (half an hour’s drive), home to an excellent leather museum, and Zahara de la Sierra (40 minutes), centred around a fountain and with a viewpoint over the neighbouring reservoir. A day out in Jerez de la Frontera (half an hour) is always a good choice as well, for a visit to the Moorish Alcazar, a tour of one of the sherry bodegas and a flamenco show. Back out in the countryside, you might like to seek out the Ocuri archaeological site (half an hour) and/or the museum and Roman archaeological site in Medina-Sidonia (40 minutes), or set off on the Sendero Río Majaceite (half an hour to the trailhead).
