- Wild camping at a natural pan area in the Northern Cape
- Great location for walking, photography and stargazing
- Remote, wildlife-filled site with no facilities
Wide-open spaces, wildlife sightings and big starry skies are what it’s all about at Verneukpan Rest Camp, set within a natural pan area in the Northern Cape.
This is a place to slow down and enjoy some of life’s simple pleasures – walking, running, cycling and photography are popular activities, or perhaps you’d like to bring a kite to fly while you’re here. Later on in the day, it’s all about relaxing by the campfire, cooking an open-air dinner and turning your gaze to the skies, where spectacular sunsets often give way to equally stunning stargazing – the Milky Way is easily visible from here on a clear night.
In keeping with this remote setting, this is a wild camping site with no facilities provided (no designated pitches, no bathrooms, no electricity and no water). That means you’ll need to come along with everything you need, including all your food and water – it’s more than an hour’s drive to the nearest shop in Brandvlei.
The trade-off, of course, is a wonderful sense of peace and nature – plus the chance to spot some amazing wildlife. It’s all about the typical arid-area species here: look out for things like steenbok, caracals, porcupines and aardvarks, plus lots of native birds.
