  • Peaceful Kalahari site just off Highway 14, 10 minutes from Kuruman
  • Game drives, mountain bike routes and hikes in a large private reserve
  • Restaurant, bar, swimming pool and private braai facilities
Seeking a spot to kick back in the Kalahari? Peaceful Red Sands Country Lodge, in the Northern Cape's Kuruman Hills, is a cracking place to choose as a base. With Highway 14 just outside the gates and the town of Kuruman 10 minutes’ drive away, it makes a fine stopover for folk on lengthy cross-country jaunts to Namibia or the coasts, as well as being a fab rural retreat in its own right. This is a most aptly named site, as you’ll note from the bright colours in the pics. And not just for those striking red sands underfoot – the country aspect is covered by the huge 1800-hectare private reserve that surrounds the place. Bring your binoculars when settling here, as the estate is home to 17 different game species and more than 50 varieties of birds. Dangerous beasts don't roam here though, so pick up a trail map and head out on self-guided game drives, mountain bike routes or hiking paths. Such activities can leave one a tad hot and dusty so you’ll be chuffed to see that back on site is an open-air pool to cool off in, with the added bonus of a bar next door to serve you a cool drink when you clamber out. There’s a playground within viewing distance of the bar terrace too, should the small sorts fancy a run about while you cradle a beer. Eats can be catered by picking something from the restaurant's top-notch menu or cooking something up the traditional South African way at your pitch’s braai area.

Local attractions

You could quite possibly spend many a day simply roaming about on site, but if you fancy getting out into the wider world, set forth for scenic outings to the spectacular still waters of Eye of Kuruman lake (10 minutes' drive) or to gaze down towards the submerged cave of Boesmansgat sinkhole (an hour). There’s another fab underground attraction at Wonderwerk Cave (40 minutes), daubed with ancient rock art – it’s still undergoing restoration work so you’ll need to call ahead to check you can get in to have a look. You can get below surface at Sishen Mine (35 minutes) too, to learn about modern mining and find out what all those diggers and machines get up to. Golfing folk, ever played a round in a desert before? If not, take your clubs over to Sishen Golf Club (25 minutes) to tick that unusual experience off your bucket list.
