  • Rural bush site off the R36 15 minutes' drive from Ohrigstad
  • Handy stopover for travellers on the Panorama Route
  • Artist-owned site with sculptures and other works on display
Folks who’ve ever struggled with directions to find their designated digs will be thankful for this one being supremely simple to spot. All you need do as you drive along the R36 is look out for a two-storey shoe. Yup, a shoe. That huge brick-built boot guides visitors into Op-i-Plaas Bush Camp, a rural spot 15 minutes’ drive from Ohrigstad. Owner Ron, as you may have guessed, is a bit of an artist, and displays his works at the site’s shop for guests and visitors to buy if they feel so inspired (not the shoe itself though – that’d be a tad impractical to pack). And there’s plenty of natural beauty to admire around here too – birds flit about in the trees and there are sparkling starry skies to gaze at come nightfall. Folk following the Panorama Route may well find the camp a handy stopover, but there’s much to keep you busy if you choose to settle for a little longer: Echo Caves are 10 minutes’ drive up the road, and heaps of activities are in the surrounding foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains (hiking, horse riding, rafting, ziplining… take your pick). On site, there’s an outdoor pool for reviving dips, and a café that serves up breakfasts and lunches along with coffees or beers to sip. Dinner means braai, of course, and pitches here have been kitted out with their own grills, along with water, electrical supplies and washing lines. Shared facilities nearby include pleasingly sizeable family bathrooms with lots of hot water.
