Settle in for spectacularly scenic stays at Valley View Backpackers, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ walk and five minutes’ drive from the centre of Graskop in Mpumalanga. This village is the gateway of South Africa’s Panorama Route, so expecting gorgeous vistas and dramatic mountain views won’t lead to disappointment – there’s even a wooden veranda on site where guests can sit, eat and mingle while soaking up every rainforest-shrouded view over the Graskop valley. When that valley entices you away from site, there are plenty of walking routes around Graskop, as well as the Mac Mac Falls and Pools 15 minutes away (head here for a cooling swim in clear waters). For activities of the heart-pumping variety, the Big Swing cable gorge swing – one of the world’s highest – and zipline are five minutes from base. Venture further afield by renting a bike at the park or hopping in the car (free secure parking is next door to the site) to zoom along the Panorama Route or towards Kruger National Park (50 minutes away). To take the decision-making out of hols, let the site team organise tours, hikes and picnics… Launch activity-filled days with breakfast on the veranda – don’t forget to grab a free tea or coffee – then reward hard work with dinner made in the shared kitchen facilities (provisions are best picked up in Graskop village, which also has restaurants, bars and an ATM) before grabbing a spot with views of the valley to make the most of sublime African sunsets.

Local attractions

This area on the edges of the Drakensberg escarpment is packed with things to do: kick explores off with Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls both 15 minutes’ drive from the site, then move onto the village of Sabie for trips to four waterfalls including the spectacular Lone Creek Falls 30 minutes’ drive away. Another place to chuck on the itinerary is a touch closer by – pick your way over to the gold rush town of Pilgrim’s Rest and pan for precious metals (or just browse for burnished bits and bobs in the shops...) within 20 minutes of the park. If you’re seeking more spots for strolls, Bourke’s Luck Potholes half an hour from the site is a geological feature created by years of water erosion with easy-access walkways and bridges to dawdle along. After animal-themed amusement instead? The Elephant Sanctuary over in Hazyview is within 40 minutes’ drive and Kruger National Park – perhaps the pinnacle of the area for its guided and self-guided tours with chances of spotting the Big Five – is within 50 minutes.
