  • Peaceful site on the banks of the Mtentweni river
  • A few minutes' drive from the beach resort of Umtentweni
  • Fishing, braai facilities and canoe hire available on site
Up for a easy weekend escape from the city? Or planning to settle in for something a little lengthier? Either way, Riverbend Chalets and Campsite is a cracking choice for a rural retreat. If you’re coming from downtown Durban it’ll take you a little over an hour to drive to this scenic spot on the banks of the Mtentweni river. Chuck your fishing kit in the car to cast a rod into the river for mullet or see if you can snaffle small fish at the dam (an easy place for beginners and kids to try their luck). Paddle along the river for a couple of kilometres (bringing your own little boat or hiring a canoe on site) and you’ll land up by the beach and restaurants in the resort of Umtentweni. All along this stretch of coast are heaps of things to do: take your pick from all manner of watersports, active days, family-friendly attractions and quiet days of wildlife-spotting – plus of course a string of stunning beaches. Best be planning a decent chunk of time on site, too, for this is an excellently laidback place to spend a relaxed hour or few. Peaceful times are pretty much guaranteed thanks to the site’s no-noise and no-music policies, so pick yourself a shaded spot to watch the wildlife that passes by or perhaps cook up up a fresh-air feast on one of the site’s portable braais.

Local attractions

So, those beaches… it’ll take you just a few minutes to drive to Umtentweni beach for safe swimming (with lifeguards, shark nets and a paddling pool, plus restaurants and pubs nearby), or Sea Park beach for angling and surfing. Beach riding, scuba diving and dolphin-watching boat trips can all be had within a half-hour drive and there’s a good handful of golf courses within a similar distance. If you fancy spending some time communing with nature, take your binoculars off to the small vlei nearby to see what water birds you can spot – heron, egrets and kingfishers are among the possibilities. For guaranteed beastie sightings, drive for half an hour or so to Butterfly Valley in Ramsgate, Pure Venom reptile park or the Riverbend Crocodile Farm. Away from the coast (and half an hour from the site) is the gorgeous Oribi Gorge nature reserve, a fab place for hiking trails and birdwatching, with ziplines and abseiling for more intrepid types.
