  • Family-friendly, secluded site in Laze, close to cave trails
  • Close to the E61: 30 minutes' drive from Ljubljana and Cerknica Lake
  • Playground, free wifi and barbecue area; under 1km from a local river
Seasoned spelunker? Fancy a pop at potholing? Speleo Camp is in the Karst district, a place said to have more caves per square kilometre than anywhere else in the world. This site in the Inner Carniola region is, unsurprisingly, best known as a caving centre, but there's a lot to recommend this place whether or not you're heading underground. This foliage-filled park is a family-friendly spot, with plenty of land for your tribe to roam around and an on-site play area where the nippers can make new friends. Older kids and adults, meanwhile, can head town to the nearby river for fishing, canoeing or kayaking (a 10-minute walk). Dogs are welcome at Speleo Camp, and the variety of outdoor explores to be had in the local area is liable to get tails wagging. Time to eat? A dedicated barbecue zone is on hand for open-air sizzles, with outdoor furniture and a covered terrace area nearby for when it's time to tuck in. For a supermarket, drive 15 minutes to the nearby town of Logatec. There are great transport links here, too: the speedy E61 road makes it a doddle to get around by car (Italy can be reached in under an hour), while a train station two kilometres away has direct services to Ljubljana.

Local attractions

Natural wonders abound in this part of Slovenia, where both the Alps and the Adriatic are within easy reach. For a local natural haven, try Cerknica Lake (30 minutes' drive), a huge intermittent body of water where an eerie lunar landscape appears at low tide. For a greener spot, try Rakov Škocjan valley and its spectacular natural bridge (20 minutes).  In terms of caves, nearby waymarked routes are on hand under a kilometre from base. These range in length and take between two and four hours to complete (ask the friendly site staff for tips on how to safely explore the area's underground geology before setting out). Further afield, Postojna Cave (20 minutes) has a five-kilometre network of caverns and underground rivers that can be explored from the comfort of a miniature railway.  For city jaunts, make tracks for Ljubljana (30 minutes). The Slovenian capital's city centre is pedestrianised, making it easy to explore highlights like the castle and covered market; visitors can also sort tours of the emerald Ljubljanica river by paddleboard. Over the border in Italy, Trieste's harbour, waterfront castles and grand canal are equally worth a gander (50 minutes).
