The peaceful campsite at Kmetija Drole sits on a hilltop farm in the village of Ravne pri Cerknem and is overlooked by a whitewashed church with an ornate bell tower. Far removed from city life, the simple grass pitches (all with electric hook-ups) have a backdrop of spectacular Slovenian Littoral mountains in the region of Goriška. Once settled at your rural base, it’s time to decide what to do. Food lovers? Sample tasty Slovenian cuisine at restaurants in Cerkno (10 minutes’ drive); choose menus where you spot traditional local specialities like žlikrofi dumplings or jota bean soup served with potica nutty bread rolls. If you’re of a rather more active bent, go hiking at Smučarski Center Cerkno (45 minutes) for stunning views of the surrounding mountains, or follow nature trails through the forests, scenic valleys and pristine rivers of mountainous Goriška. Put an adrenalin spin on your outdoor activities by mountain biking down steep slopes, try horse riding through woodland, whitewater rafting on the Cerknica River or paragliding over the rugged foothills.
