- Family-friendly Prešov Region site five minutes’ drive from Humenné
- Vihorlat Museum five minutes’ drive and Brekov Castle 15 minutes
- Fishing lake and natural swimming pool; wine cellar and restaurant
With pitches on a neatly mown camping field lined with cypress trees, Autokemp Jazero L.A. is five minutes’ drive from historic Humenné in eastern Slovakia’s rural Prešov Region. This place has two very special selling points: a game fishing lake where you can net carp, catfish, pike and zander (catch-and-return only), and a vast swimming pool containing naturally filtered water. The latter is a gathering point for families and friends, who congregate on the deck to soak up the sun.
You can also make new chums around the shared barbecues, or head to the traditionally styled wooden cellar bar to sample Slovak wines and watch sports on the big TV screen. Alternatively, the restaurant serves cold beer and tasty meals on its terrace, which has views over the fishing lake to the forested hills. There’s a playground with a trampoline, climbing frames and sand pit right next door, so parents can keep an eye on their kids as they eat.
Also on site is a beach volleyball court and plenty of grassy space for running around with a football, playing frisbee or exercising any dogs. A shower block, washing-up sinks and secure car park complete the roster of on-site facilities.

Local attractions
The leafy town of Humenné (five minutes’ drive) has lots going for it. Open for tours of its opulent rooms and art collections, the splendid Vihorlat Museum is found in a graceful 17th-century mansion surrounded by formal gardens. You can see how farmers and country folks lived at Humenné Open-Air Museum, also home to a recreated wooden church and blacksmith’s forge.
Slovak heritage just keeps on coming: visit the hilltop ruins of Brekov Castle (15 minutes) for its compact history museum and far-reaching views over wooded hills. About the same distance away is Castle Jasenov, almost razed to the ground in the 17th century. It’s still worth making the journey though, to admire its massive stone tower and walls.
To get out and about in the pure fresh air, take a sailing dinghy or pedalo onto Zemplínska šírava Reservoir (35 minutes) to explore the shoreline. Another sprawling lake is found at Veľká Domaša (half an hour), with facilities for swimming, kayaking and – when wind conditions are right – windsurfing.
