  • Small laidback family-friendly site in the scenic Maramureș
  • A 15-minute drive from Baia Mare and five minutes from a fishing lake
  • Campfire area, ping pong, hammocks and above-ground kids' pool
Owners Camelia and Pierre are pretty happy with their lot: they wanted a place with easy access to city and country, and they found it in a fine little spot called Camping Noroc, in Romania’s scenic and historical Maramureș region – this family-friendly site is in the village of Săcălășeni and 15 minutes’ drive from the city of Baia Mare. This peaceful rural corner is well set up for quiet and leisurely stays, with hammocks strung up about the site, an above-ground pool for the kids to cool off in, and pitches in the shade of pretty plum trees for resting up. On days when more activity appeals, Camelia and Pierre can organise kayak trips on the Lapus river, about half a kilometre from base, and will sort guests with kayaks and safety equipment for these excursions. That’s not the only way to explore the river either – a cycling route along the dykes of the Lapus can be joined nearby. After lengthy days of activity, freshen up in the outdoor shower (or the indoor ones for more traditional types) before passing easy evenings playing ping pong or board games, or mingling with other guests around the campfire by the barbecue area – Camelia and Pierre are often on hand with a glass of local tipple palinka.

Local attractions

Within the village of Săcălășeni are a pretty and traditional church, as well as a sprawling swimming complex with pools and slides. Slightly further afield (about five kilometres from the site) is a fishing lake that should be a must for anyone angling for a few hours with rod and reel. Broaden areas of activity then to include the city of Baia Mare (15 minutes’ drive), where guests at the site can wander about a host of museums – including those dedicated to ethnography and mineralogy – visit the planetarium, stroll through the Old Town and clamber up Stefan’s Tower. Unsure of whether to stick with all things historical or switch to days in nature? Why not both? Lacul Albastru, a stunning lake with bright blue waters, and the traditional wooden Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, with its impressive spire, are both about half an hour away. For farther-flung adventures, visits to Rohia and Rohița monasteries and to the Budești Josani church can be had within an hour, and a trip to the city of Sighetu Marmației on the Ukrainian border comes highly recommended for its ethnographic museum, Maramureș Village Museum and memorial to the victims of communism. Also worth a visit in Sighetu is the Elie Wiesel Memorial House, where the Holocaust survivor and author was born and raised prior to his ghettoisation and subsequent deportation to Auschwitz.
