  • Holiday village in Alvão Nature Park surrounded by hiking trails
  • A short drive to ziplining, forest segway rides, waterpark and more
  • Outdoor pool and paddling pool, massage room, eatery and barbecue area
Set in a nature park, a short stroll from a forest-fringed lake, surrounded by waterfalls and splendid scenes aplenty, and within half an hour’s pootle of a treetop activity park; an ace eco-friendly adventure centre with a waterpark, a farm and a miniature golf for energetic tiddlies; plus lots more. How fab. The spectacular setting of Alvão Village Camping in Alvão Nature Park also makes active days for outdoorsy sorts a cinch: mountain biking, climbing and hiking routes are all over the immediate vicinity, and the area is positively covered in wow-inducing waterfalls, making for lots of highly splendid and superly stimulating strolls too: plan lots of extra time for post-tramp frolics in the fresh springwater pools. A fine big outdoor pool surrounded by a grassy solarium to laze at length around, and a kids’ pool alongside facilitate family fun in the water, while full-on relaxation is on offer over in the massage room – and for parents, it's made even easier by the presence of an indoor play area and adventure playground. A barbecue area at which sizzle one’s sausages, plus a mini mart packed with local produce too are on hand to take good care of sustenance while on site, and if you can’t be faffed to cook, then Alvão Village Camping’s restaurant serves up scrumptious morsels. Making your way around in a motorhome? You’re sorted at the park’s dedicated service point.

Delve into the area’s Roman heritage with a visit to the Complexo Mineiro Romano de Tresminas archaeological park to wander the galleries once hewn here for the transportation, removal and treatment of mined minerals, or amble over the Roman bridges of historic Chaves. For time travel elsewhere, take a trip to the medieval Pena de Aguiar Castle in Telões. Looking for lofty adventures, or outdoor family-based fun to keep all active and highly amused? Within half an hour’s drive are an outdoor activity centre with paintballing, woodland segway rides, climbing, archery, kids’ pony rides, trampolining, off-road buggy tours and 1.2 kilometres’ worth of ziplines, plus an eco-friendly adventure centre with a waterpark, more ziplining, a farm and a miniature golf course. For relaxing days, you’re a short drive from the Douro wine region, and plenty of pampering is on the cards over in Pedras Salgadas’ thermal spa and nature park: plonk oneself here for at least a day to partake in treatments like massages, manicures and pedicures and thermal springwater soaks.
