What a spectacular Setúbal spot this is, sprawling out over 220,000 square metres with a dense pine forest on one side and the soft sands of Bicas beach on the other. As an added bonus, Parque de Campismo Campimeco is a 10-minute drive from Aldeia do Meco – a town famed in the area for its seafood restaurants – and about 20 minutes from Sesimbra.
With the beach right next door, it’s quite likely that you might spend a fair amount of time over there: it’s a lengthy stretch with plenty of space for sunbathing and paddling, plus a naturist section for those who want to be sure of avoiding the dreaded tan lines.
For a different kind of watery way to fill your day, head off to a nearby lagoon for windsurfing and paddleboarding or spread out a towel by the site’s outdoor pool for sunning yourself between swims. Time to dry off for a while? Chill out on the lawn while the nippers spend time at the games room or play area. Or, of course, you could settle in for a lazy lunch at the restaurant or create a barbecue feast using bits from the mini market on site.

Local attractions
The beach is likely to soak up a fair amount of your time, presumably, but it’s worth also planning a bit of time taking in other bits of the coastline – perhaps with a wander around Cabo Espichel Lighthouse (20 minutes’ drive) or a day of windsurfing or paddleboarding at Lagoa de Albufeira, a seaside lagoon 15 minutes’ drive away.
Seaside scenery while you stroll? There are heaps of excellent trails to follow in the Parque Natural da Arrábida (15 minutes’ drive) and the Serra da Arrabida (35 minutes) beyond it. Highlights to seek out include the little sea-cave chapel Lapa de Santa Margarida (40 minutes) and the views from Miradouro do Norte (45 minutes) – and there’s often scope to end your hike with a dip at a pretty beach.
And while it may surprise you to hear it, given the chilled vibe that comes from being happily sandwiched between the forest and the beach, it’s only about an hour’s drive to get up to Lisbon to check out the Torre de Belém, wander around the pretty Alfama district, hit the museums and feast on sweet custard tarts.
