Catering for children and easy access to the site. If those are your criteria for a camping holiday, you’ve hit the jackpot by staying at Camping Quinta da Cerejeira. At 25 minutes’ drive from cultured Tomar in central Portugal, this family-run, family-friendly campsite is easily accessible – even for larger caravans and motorhomes – and has a paved driveway so there’s no fiddly messing around getting to your pitch. Set in the terraced orchard of a country estate planted with olive and fruit trees, the pitches are generously spaced out – some in shade and others in sunshine if that’s what you prefer. Modern facilities to make family life easy include hot showers, washing-up sinks and a washing machine (use for a small fee). Toddlers can spend hours on the trampoline or building castles in the sandbox; you can also borrow toys, board games and books to keep them occupied. The swimming pool is fenced and has a child-proof gate to ensure the safety of smaller guests; keep an eye on your kids frolicking in the water as you soak up the sun on the surrounding deck. A small on-site shop sells soft drinks, snacks and ice cream, not forgetting fresh breakfast rolls every morning (except Sundays). If you’re planning a barbecue supper, buy supplies from Ferreira do Zêzere (five minutes’ drive) and enjoy cooking alfresco as you revel in the peace and quiet of the Portuguese countryside.

Local attractions

You’re within striking distance of three intriguing cities. UNESCO-listed Tomar (25 minutes’ drive) is chock-full of historic castles, convents and chapels. There are tombs of Portuguese kings in the fabulously ornate Santa Cruz Monastery at Coimbra (50 minutes), where you can also visit several other impressive monasteries and a brace of cathedrals. Fátima (40 minutes) is home to Portugal’s most revered pilgrimage church, the sparkling-white Sanctuary of Fátima with its soaring Neo-Baroque bell tower and modern basilica with seating for more than 8,000 worshippers. Continuing with the cultural theme, whizz back in time to see some of the best-preserved floor mosaics in Europe on a tour of sprawling Roman excavations at Conimbriga (50 minutes). Another architectural marvel worth checking out is the two-tiered Pegões Aqueduct (25 minutes), constructed in the 17th-century to carry water into Tomar. Regional heritage dealt with, why not get back to nature? Several hiking trails and bike routes can be accessed from the campsite, and if you fancy time out on the water, there are dinghy, kayak and windsurfer rentals available on the reservoir at Castelo do Bode Dam (half an hour).
