  • Quiet Alentejo retreat 10 minutes’ drive from Castelo de Vide
  • Serra de São Mamede hikes 25 minutes’ drive and Marvão half an hour
  • Well-equipped vintage caravan; swimming pool and outdoor kitchen
When you’re in search of a peaceful rural retreat tucked into Portugal’s wild Alentejo landscapes, the teeny-tiny microsite at Lugar de Vagar – 10 minutes’ drive from historic Castelo de Vide – fits the bill very nicely indeed. The unusual accommodation here is in Olivia Convida, a 1970s Digue Amorette caravan that has swapped life on the road for a permanent sojourn next to a stream and the ruins of an old olive press. Set on a 14-hectare property, the site is totally private, with a double bed, seating and a kitchen former (all essentials provided) neatly slotted inside the caravan. Outside there is a cooking corner for barbecuing on an electric grill, and an open-air seating area for eating alfresco and soaking up the sun in a garden filled with native plants. The exclusive-use, eco-friendly bathroom has consistent hot water in the outdoor shower and is steps away from the caravan. The plunge pool is ready and waiting whenever you need to cool down. Close by is a fully fenced farm populated by goats and sheep – and because the site is in a protected area, it’s strictly forbidden to make fires.
