  • Family-friendly park on the edge of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park
  • Winery tours around a 70-hectare estate within 20 kilometres
  • Terrace restaurant serving daily specials
Well now, just look at this. Spectacular views are yours for the taking at Camping Quinta das Cegonhas, set splendidly on an old farm on the edge of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park in central Portugal, with tiptop vistas of the surrounding valley. Solo travellers, groups and families are all welcome to holiday here… The landscape around the park is scattered with big boulders, green valleys and several mountain peaks, so you're mighty well sorted for heady (and challenging) hikes and bike routes – and this Gouveia municipality and Guarda province setting is just the ticket too for birdwatching, ancient archaeological sites, medieval village wanders and winery tours: a vast vineyard is under 20 minutes' drive from the site. After all that, make for the restaurant of an evening for daily specials on the terrace (and make it your mission to munch through them all), or toddle along to the bar for coffee, local wines and small eats. The restaurant specialises in Portuguese cuisine with fresh, local ingredients and organic produce from the garden. Camping Quinta das Cegonhas has pitches set on terraces around the estate; showers; toilets and a washing-up area. There's also a fine big pool, set like most of the rest of the site among first-rate valley views.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely peaceful location, with large spacious pitches nestled between fruit and olive trees. Plenty of shade for hot summer. Clean facilities and friendly staff.
Restaurant, menu of day available, with lovely fresh bread on order. Well kept pool for refreshing dip. Kids enjoyed trampoline too.

Disliked Some slopes though is on hill side. For us access was very difficult as had caravan car with bikes, restricting turning access. Sadly this would result in us not returning despite lovely site. We had to un hitch and remove bikes twice to get out !!
Washing up area could be improved with larger sinks to wash pots. Some hand soaps for washing after using toilets would have been appreciated.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked clean and tidy. Lovely views. Quiet. Friendly staff. Drinking water available.

Disliked Advised only day before swimming pool not available but it had been unavailable since January. No discount given although we did ask
No shop and only took cash but we were not advised and had to make a 10 mile round trip to an ATM.

Quite hilly on site with tiered levels. Dog walking is at the top.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Quite a small site but well laid out. Gardens tended to, showered were clean but a little dated. Plenty of hot water. If we stayed again I would have to check about the pool.
Area for dog walking .

Disliked The pool was not in use and it was hot...The cafe was not really open yet either. They seemed to be getting it ready for opening properly. We weren't advised about the pool closure until after we had paid the small deposit.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Plenty of room around the pitch, with shade in the morning. Laid back managing. Excellent restaurant meal Wednesday night ( closed Tuesday, but takeaway option). Relaxed and quiet. Lovely walk into local village, Cafe Tinto excellent value, although no outside seating. RV service points excellent. Would go there again.

Disliked No water in pool, but it’s low season. Cycle route maps inconsistent. Toilets regularly cleaned, but check for toilet paper before you enter!

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nice location with beautiful trees around. Quite peaceful and nice bar area to hang out. Bread is available on request. Lots of walks in surrounding area.

Disliked Open pitches which made it a bit awkward with people trying to squeeze in. Facilities are in a busy area so lack privacy and no hand soap or paper towels provided to wash hands.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Stunning location, we had a really private camping spot up the steep hill.

We were fortunate to visit during the annual festival so enjoyed local food, drink and entertainment. Just lovely.

The town was quaint but only a small number of cafes. The ones we tried were super friendly - one even fed our dog 🐕

One of my favourite stops of the tour with stunning vistas across the valley.

Disliked The location is up for sale so may explain a lack of investment.

The pool in a state of disrepair.

Needs a slight uplift by any new owners - it’s really popular so seems a shame not to invest in a few things

(These are minor things but worth a mention)

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Immaculate shower facilities and wash up. Amazing views and glorious countryside. Lots of bird life. Loads of information boards, but couldn’t see any recommendations for local walks which would have been nice.

Disliked Not really dislike but to be aware - steep sharp bend access on cobblestone- not good when raining and wet. It was very quiet during our stay, pool wasn’t open and looked in poor state of repair but probably will be fine in season. Laundry would have been helpful.

Local attractions

As the site lies at the gateway to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, hiking and cycling trails aplenty are within easy reach to keep you occupied for weeks should you so wish. The natural park is home to Portugal's biggest mountain range (called the Serra da Estrela, oddly enough) and is the country's biggest conservation area, covering about 1,000 square kilometres: look out for badgers, wildcats, otters and wall lizards if off on a nature spotting trip. A vast vineyard with tastings and extensive tours is about 18 kilometres from the site, run by affable vintner Manuel. The max number on each tour is 10, so if you're seriously thirsting for a trip to a Portuguese vineyard, let the Camping Quinta das Cegonhas know your intentions on arrival and they can book for you. A short drive from the park will take you to Lago Comprida; hike away from the lake for around four kilometres and you'll find another lake with a manmade concrete and granite structure in it – the Dam of Conchos – that looks (and acts) a bit like a plughole, transporting the lake's overflow down through a 1519-metre tunnel to Lago Comprida: it's quite a sight and well worth the walk. Historic towns and villages such as Melo, Folgosinho, Gouveia and Linhares are all within easy reach.
