There are island paradises and then there’s Ilha de Armona, a small car-free island 20 minutes’ ferry ride from the coast of Olhão in Faro. In the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and with more than 10 kilometres of sandy beaches lining the coast, this place is a stunner, so sort stays immediately at Orbitur Ilha de Armona. The big draw hereabouts is that sprawling beach, of course. There’s direct access from the site to a sandy sheltered stretch (less than a minute’s easy stroll), while larger segments can be explored on Praia da Armona Ría (five minutes’ walk) – with warmer water to splash about in and views towards Olhão – and on the lengthy Atlantic Ocean-facing Praia da Armona Mar (10 minutes’ walk). As this is part of a natural park, be sure to keep eyes peeled on all wanderings for aquatic birds, along with the European chameleon and rare plants. Just nine kilometres long, Ilha de Armona is very walkable, so those wanderings ought to be plentiful. In high season, the island’s cafés, restaurants, beach bars and shops will be open and bustling, while in low season the island has a quieter vibe. Luckily, it’s a quick five-minute stroll to the ferry for crossings to Olhão, where there are shops, cafés, restaurants and plenty else to do year-round.

Liked My family and I absolutely loved staying here. The access to the beach is safe for the children and all of the guests are very friendly. The hosts look after each individual very well and are always available. There are good amenities on site accessible all day. The apartments are comfortable with everything you need.

Catch the ferry to Ilha de Armona from the boarding pier on Avenida 5 de Outubro in Olhão. This is a passenger ferry only, so cars must remain on the mainland. The crossing will take roughly 20 minutes, and the site is less than five minutes’ walk from the island’s ferry terminal.

Local attractions

As Ilha de Armona is car-free, guests who have travelled this far without an automobile might prefer to stick close at hand, taking advantage of a decent public transport system to get about. It’s a 20-minute ferry crossing from the island to Olhão from where more wide-ranging explores can be had. Not finished with island living? Stick about the port of Olhão to catch the ferry to Ilha da Culatra (a total of roughly 30 minutes of boat time), where more beaches and a lighthouse can be visited. In Olhão itself, a seafront park, a covered historical market, and a replica of the small boat used by local fishermen to sail to Brazil in the early 19th century are within easy walking distance for the whole family. Slightly further afield, a 40-minute walk will land visitors at the restored residence and grounds (and museum) of famed poet João Lucio. For even farther flung adventures, guests can stay car-free by boarding the train to nearby Faro (a 25-minute journey) or hire a car in Olhão and drive instead (20 minutes). The city’s a must-explore for its stunning architecture, art-filled marina, waterfront gardens and Capela dos Ossos, a chapel decorated with human skulls and bones.
